I grew up in northwest indiana a while away from the Mississippi and my parents and grandparents still always said to never swim in the river and if you fall in get out fast cuz of them catfish. They swallow kids all the time and you heard legends of some eating full grown men lol.

Here in Alton, the stories are that the workers building our bridge refused to go in the water without harpoon guns.
