Endowment effect: People overestimate the value of things they already own.
You say an arm or a hand isn’t worth a million dollars, but let me ask you this: if you had a million dollars and someone offered you a severed arm for a million dollars, would you take it? No? Then clearly a million dollars is worth more than an arm.

I think the push for coal in the US and Germany and China would have been a better example.
Not to defend Japan but it is worth noting that the populations and species of whales Japan hunts aren't in danger and their whaling doesn't appear to be impacting that species conservation significantly(their tuna fishing is a much bigger concern in that manner). But yeah, we all agreed to stop with that shit, get on board Japan it hasn't even been economical for decades.

It is definitely an issue. I live in a pretty rural area. It's relatively safe, but we have our share of gang violence and plenty of guns. I carry a firearm and other items for personal defense daily. I don't like going to other states where firearm carry is prohibited. My permit to carry is good in about 33 states.
I have to travel to NYC soon. No guns allowed for me there... very restrictive knife laws (most locking one-handed opening knives can be classified as an illegal gravity knife through a very tortured interpretation of their law).
Guns have always been part of my life growing up. Going hunting or shooting for recreation at family holidays.

Interesting article…
> But, with research showing Black and Hispanic children are significantly more likely to be shot to death by police than their white counterparts are, Joseph said the neighbor’s call put her daughter in lethal peril.
A little black girl was close to death just by talking to police‽ Thats quite a stretch. Perhaps the caller should be charged with attempted murder by putting her in this life-threatening situation.
Edit: not being from America, i guess police murder is common for little black girls. I honestly feel sorry for you. In my country, police are trusted and they help.

My vote is for the people who took it a step further, and are now arguing about it in the reddit comments.
This is the modern news cycle, it's all just outrage bait to get people riled up and talking shit about "the other team." Doesn't even matter if the topic at hand is factual as long as they can leverage it to rationalize being angry and attacking "the enemy."

If I lived in the US I’d want to be armed, because it’s so dangerous.
The UK isn’t dangerous. British people don’t need to be armed to the hilt on a daily basis. The US has 18x as many murders despite only being 6x larger in population. Last year there were six months with no shootings at all in London. That would be unheard of in NYC or LA. Even stabbings are worse in the US.

Reply to Man who lost testicle from supervisor's hit awarded $295,000 by wawaboy
"USRL was liable for: $4,364 for four months’ severance for wrongful dismissal; $100,000 for battery; $25,000 for punitive damages against the supervisor personally; $10,000 for assault; $50,000 for human rights damages; $5,794 in unpaid wages; $75,000 for moral damages; and $25,000 in punitive damages. The supervisor was responsible for only $25,000 of this grand total of $295,158, but if the supervisor proves unable to pay that amount, it can be collected from the employer as well."
That guy should be in jail.
"Worst of all, the supervisor hit Osmani in the testicles in front of all his co-workers with all of his might, doing so much damage that he later had to have the testicle removed. Adding insult to this actual injury, when Osmani complained that he was having marital problems as a result, the supervisor advised: “I can help, bring by your wife.”"
