Is there a good article that sums up everything that’s going on with the MTA?

Sad but super true. I do this all the time. One time when I was younger my friends and I were hungover after an all nighter I just pulled into a holiday inn and went in and started eating the breakfast they put out. The staff didn’t say anything because I was white and dressed appropriately to be there.

Right and "cheaper" is the issue. The landlord would need to do a ton of work, devalue an overleveraged building, and after everything end up with residential units that are "cheap" so there is no money to be made.
It would probably be better in the long run to tear down the buildings and put up residential in its place. That would be worth the tax subsidies.

You either have your stereotypes mixed up or don’t know what FD stands for.

if congress won't send us money, how about Biden sends the DOJ to investigate all the damn graft, so we don't have to spend as much money?

I always used to just find a crowded bar and walk to the bathroom without paying. I guess it probably depends on the time of day and location.

You’re probably right. I know they have one in NYC.

But then those rents are essentially losses. Keep the losses on paper, all good.

Clearly you've never been to Stone Street. There's tons of places open south of Fulton st.

Huh, Crif Dogs is from NY? I thought it was a Berkeley/Bay Area thing, and the “rival” to Top Dog.

People don't want = owners can't charge the high rent they'd want to.
So instead of a luxury apartment, with super rich folks, you might only get an expensive apartment with people that can barely afford it. And every building owner thinks they deserve the former.

I mean they sent billions in money to the MTA, but of course it all went to new stuff that they can stand in front of with giant scissors.

American (brooklyn) Aussie here.
Don’t think you’d find better coffee here. Y’all have amazing coffee over there!
Just some favorite spots I grew up going to a lot:
Worth checking out flushing for the amazing cheap eats in both Chinese and Korean. I find that the food in Chinatown is very lacking these days (compared to flushing and 8th Ave) but as a tourist, it’d be fun. Definitely go to the ice cream factory, mei lai wah, and stop in one of the Hong Kong cafes.
If it’s a nice day, grab a coffee and walk across the brooklyn bridge to dumbo. Get some nice views of the bridge on the old cobblestone streets. At the end, grab some shake shack by the water. (The shroom shack burger is my fav.)
Check out the west village and east village to experience more of an university/young vibe. Tons of food options and usually lots going on.
Pizza - my personal local favorite is the infamous L&B pizza in south brooklyn.
Attractions - highly recommend the New York public library and metropolitan museum. If you do a bit of research, sometimes on Chelsea on the museum/galleries district, there are openings which spell free drinks. Great fun for gallery hopping.
Have fun!

Eh, even if they managed to clear $200 million as profit, they'd still be 2.8 billion dollars in the hole.
I don't think people realize just how insanely large the issue is.

Also since you’re Australian I would bring a really big knife. If someone tries to mug you using a knife say “that’s not a knife” then pull yours out and say “that’s a knife”
Works everytime

Ask for federal money? Grab money from drivers? Raise the fare prices? Cut down on services?
The amount of gymnastics to avoid tackling the obvious is staggering:
$500 million per year lost because of unpaid fares. Any decent effort could recover half of that.
The ideology doesn’t serve anyone.

It’s okay they’ll just enact congestion tolls to compensate
