Daring to preserve the character of your neighborhood is racist. Let’s make the whole borough look like South Richmond Hill it’ll be so nice! Funny enough if this was a state led initiative where the government was actually developing housing and investing in communities, and updating and modernizing the derelict run down LIRR stops in Eastern Queens I’d support it. You know actually accommodating proposed booms in population like how they used to develop the borough at the turn of the century.
But it’s not. These developers will be selling their units at market rate. This is made quite clear in both the proposals and discussions taking place at Albany. There is no mention of building new schools, increasing public transit, expanding walkways and pedestrian safe zones ZERO. The state gives a paltry “we will work alongside developers” yeah ok, sure. How about a little more detail than we will get to that bridge when we cross it? Hochul is giving a gift to private developers under the guise of equity. These idiots are eating it up. Also, a lot of residents and civic associations in SE Queens are against this proposal as well, but that would not fit with the “how dare you be racist!” narrative in these comments.

This should be adopted nation-wide corporations buying up whole neighborhoods

I know it’s not much, but my work takes me all over the city every day using the subway. I’ll definitely keep an eye out. So sorry to hear about this.

Seoul’s subway system is way bigger than NYCs. And NYC’s subway really shouldn’t be 24/7. Shit here closes much earlier than other international cities.

Honest question from a setting where I cannot easily Google: don’t landlords have some leeway to un-stabilize a vacant apartment?

Tl;dr because new skyscrapers are more narrow than old ones, and narrower skyscrapers take more time to build than wide floor plans with comparable total floor space.

That would be true if there wasn’t a strict revenue target on that tax. But since there is, it’s not about discouraging behavior, it’s to raise revenue.

Neither of you put in a good argument.
Tax is used often to discourage behaviors with negative externalities, like piling tons of cars into Manhattan.
Not sure how that applies to streaming Netflix

Giving more money to the MTA is asinine. They are a black pit of despair.

MTA can never have a surplus, if they did they wouldn't get additional funds every year. It doesn't matter if they waste the funds on water bottles or parties, they have to deplete it all. It's the reason why they give such lavish contracts to Small Businesses and why they have hundreds of surveyors. It's Rinse and Repeat, milk the tax base. BTW Subways, Buses, Transit is all funded by the public, then the MTA forces you, the rider, to pay for using mass transit. Double dip much?

Interestingly, I lived in one of those buildings that banned Airbnb rentals - it was a great way to find a balance between a safe living environment and protecting property values. That said, it's not a bad idea for those who live in buildings without the ban to be aware of their own leases.
