Not sure where you got your statistics from but you need to reconsider people who live in Manhattan vs the rest of the boroughs. People who own cars in Manhattan are often pretty wealthy, because it's much more expensive there to own one, as you will need to use parking garages. But in the other boroughs? That is not quite the case. The majority of people I know with cars (all outside Manhattan) are not earning that much. And many who do own cars here go for cheap, used, but reliable cars that don't cost anywhere near 12-15k per year, not even close. In some parts of these outer boroughs, public transit is either nonexistent, slow, or unreliable. Even with traffic, driving is often faster.
People are not entitled to store private property on public space, but when transportation systems are setup a certain way, we expect certain things. If you want to reduce car usage, you need to provide better alternatives. Other major cities are doing so much better with their subways. But NYC continues to ignore subway expansion in the outer boroughs. And subways in my opinion are the most efficient method of travel in a city and should be the #1 priority in transportation. More than buses and biking.

As sarcastic as this is, it's sadly true. I did deliveries with my own car for a few months and only like 10% of the time did I find an actual spot (usually only if I was sent to eastern Queens). The rest of the time I had to use hydrants, double park, or block someone's driveway.

Maintenance has to be a huge part of it. There are parts of the system still using parts designed (if not manufactured) a century ago. In many cases there are no companies manufacturing replacement parts, so they have to be machined in-house by the MTA. I'm pretty sure there are literal blacksmiths employed by the MTA because that was still state of the art technology when the subways were constructed.
Years of deferred maintenance are catching up.

can you even transfer it to a new card anymore? i haven't needed to in a while but someone told me they couldn't do it not too long ago. but they might have been trying to combine multiple cards.

I’ve always thought NYC is different because we butter our Kaiser rolls, a delicacy that is rarely found in the wider world .

1000%. the subway is a service that makes the city a desirable place to live, work, and do business. it enables people to move freely and cheaply throughout the city throughout the day and night, visitors and citizens alike. the goal is not to make a direct profit off of these people for the city. the goal is to use public funds to benefit the public -- to spend tax dollars to improve the lives and livelihood of the citizenry and visitors to the city.

First, 2 mg can kill. Not 10. That’s why a test strip that is SO sensitive that can detect 10 nano grams is so important Test all of your drug. It’s about what you are about to ingest. Be safe

SI has some of the longest average commutes in the country.

The average one way commute in the United States is 27.6 minutes. Obnoxiously long commutes are pretty common NY metro area but Staten Island and the Bronx are absolute monstrosities compared to the rest of the country.

do you have a source that the fare used to cover the cost? because that seems incredibly unrealistic beyond maybe the first few years. the fare literally didn't change until after WWII.

I don’t doubt that your test detects fentanyl extremely accurately in whatever it samples. But that’s only enough to make a determination about the 50mg which is consumed by the reagent test. There are 950 untested milligrams remaining, of which 10mg is enough to kill.

Can confirm. Used to wake up at 5:45 for my 8:10 A.M. classes at CUNY. 90 minute commute, both ways, on three different modes of transportation: bus, ferry, train. Wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

The city payed for the construction of the subway lines and owned them. The private operators had operating agreements to run them.
