I'm with you.

How come the MTA hasn't adopted the idea of paying the amount based on how far you've traveled (i.e. going from the Bronx to Brooklyn just cost more than going from UWS to Midtown)?
That's how the commuter trains work in addition to other subway systems in other countries.

Also the unlimited MetroCard.
The MTA reports the average fare paid per ride in it's annual reports. In 2019 it was $2.10, and it increased significantly in the pandemic as commutation ridership dropped.

The ability (at least 10 years ago) to go everywhere at anytime, directly is worth the extra cost. The only real problem is parking.

Yeah they do make a big mess. But if my yard had a rat infestation and a mulberry tree, I'd say it only had 1 problem.

Really really good is a bit of a stretch and depends on where you live. There are some areas with zero (I mean nothing, not even buses) public transit. The free train sounds great but it often runs only every 30 mins and sometimes not at all on the weekends due to track work. I live in New Dorp which has a multitude of transit options, but recently I needed to take the bus to Mariner’s harbor and it took 1.5 hours. If I drove it would have been 20 minutes top. Ironically I didn’t drive that day because I was picking my car up from a repair shop there.
I do use local transit here but only when it happens to work out for the situation.
For off the boro transit, it also depends on the situation, but try catching a Manhattan bound SIM1 in the evening during rush hour. Literally 1hr+ wait times.

I think the fare is probably underpriced at the moment, plus we have no zone pricing. I don’t think it’s a regressive stance to say we’re probably due for a fare increase.
Obviously so many other financial problems should be fixed at the MTA before touching the fare price, but this is something that would be comparatively easy to enact, and sometimes you gotta grab the low hanging fruit.
There are LOTS of ways to reduce the standard fare — from reduced fare cards to monthly unlimited cards.

Rule 1 - No intolerance, dog whistles, violence or petty behavior

(b). No dog whistles.
(c). No inciting violence, advocating the destruction of property or encouragement of theft.
(d). No petty behavior. This includes announcing that you have down-voted or reported someone, picking fights, name calling, insulting, bullying or calling out bad grammar.

Buying highly illegal, hard drugs off the street to shoot into your vains is hardly comparable to having sex while the parents are away. Come the fuck on.
As a parent if a 9 year old, I’m one hundred perfect teaching abstinence when it comes to hard drugs. What is your plan, “don’t forget to practice safe smoking meth?” I’m also raising my kid a tad differently than how my wife and I came up.
And yes, I know a little of what I’m talking about. While I never touched meth, heroin, or crack, or had an opioid addiction, I did eat my weight in tabs and acid decades ago, as I was heavily involved in the late 90’s party scene. So I’ve been around everything, and thank fucking god there wasn’t this fent issue 20-30 years ago. Not because I think I’d be dead. I’m too smart for that and wouldn’t have did what I did in today’s environment given the risk involved. I just wouldn’t have had the fun that I did.

Like I said, some people need cars. Many New Yorkers do not. This is simply a fact.
Years ago, we did need a car, due to the travel required by my residency (I was expected to be at multiple area hospitals, depending on the day). When I finished my residency, we no longer needed a car, so we got rid of it.
I am not envious of my friends’ second home. I believe no one needs a second home; it’s unnecessary excess in a world of finite resources. This includes my friends, who I overall like and respect greatly. They are extremely decent people, but I disagree with them on this aspect. That’s okay.

It sucks, but it's worth it for them to finally cut ties with this one. There are always more world-class sopranos waiting in the wings. Every performer should keep this in mind.

Yeah but Hunter gave me a full ride + I liked being in Manhattan despite the torturous commute, probably wouldn't be the same person today if I went to CSI

I’ve lived here all my life and most families I know owned cars. A lot of us have family on LI or NJ, use our cars for work outside of Manhattan and generally like to take trips outside of the city. See how my anecdotal experience cancels out yours? As hard as you might try you won’t be able to control other peoples lives.
PS wealth envy is not a good look.
MysteriousHedgehog23 t1_jcp8pvp wrote
It costs $127 for a monthly unlimited Metrocard. You can use it as many times as you want, which when you factor in trips outside the roundtrip to and from work Monday - Friday - makes the fare much lower then $2.75 per ride.
I’m always amazed when people complain about the cost of transit or what they aren’t getting for their fare money.

Nthing the shit about commutes. I wound up living 10-15 minutes on foot from the ferry for a year a while back... and I was still like 90 minutes from everywhere. Midtown, Bushwick, even a job in DUMBO right by the private ferry... with the transit layout, ~90 minutes. Honestly the ferry ride portion is the nicest commute I've ever had, great to wake up to the harbor with some swill terminal coffee, but not worth it.

Yeah another train line that goes from the west shore to east shore would be incredible. But I don’t see any way to fix the buses here since they share the same roads that cars do. Situation seems hopeless rn…
