Are rewards in the form of “points” and “cash back” on a credit card worth it or am I being played somehow?

Am I being played somehow or is this what smart people do? Why not just use a credit card for everything and pay off the amount spent on the card each month? Are they just relying on people spending more than they have so they can make it back in the form of interest?
