Long time lurker & first time poster -

I'm a commercial sailor and wife works a corporate job.

As a sailor, I'm union and jump from ships to ships, belonging to various cos and hence get atleast 2 to 3 W2s through the year.

We sold our house in Bayonne, NJ for professional reasons and moved to Ridgefield, CT in October, 2022.

The problem that has arisen is that 2 of the W2s that we've received shows the Ridgefield, CT address & have linked the NJ & the CT earnings together.

The wife worked for the CT corporate, while still living in NJ for 3 months and have received the W2 for the total on the CT address. I've worked for a shipping line and the same problem.

Meanwhile, we had paid the NJ state taxes on our income in full advance for the year 2022, while doing 2021 taxes. So, a refund should be available!?

The question is should we go thru the pay stubs and manually show the state difference while filing taxes or just file everything in CT.

And then, there are the various 1099s from investments, etc. Same conundrum.

I use Turbo Tax to file taxes & would prefer not to go to a CPA.

What do I do? Please help.

You need to pay the state taxes for money earned while you were a resident in that state. The best way to do this is to contact your HR department and ask for a corrected W-2 (W-2C). Some companies can be pain’s getting this done but it will be the best because then your taxes and the company’s payroll submissions will match. If they don’t do it, you don’t get out of jail free. You still need to report correctly on your taxes the income you earned in each state.

Thank You.

I forgot to add that her job deducts state taxes, while my job does not deduct state taxes.

Do I have to do the same for all our various investment 1099s? Show 10 months of NJ separately and 2 months of CT?

Edit - Considering that shipping lines don't deduct state taxes, should I still ask for a W-2C from them showing the different addresses? Or can I just submit the W2 that I have with the CT address and manually input the state wise incomes?

Thanks once again for your help.

If they don’t withhold any state taxes you don’t really need a corrected w2. I would think.

You only need to show investment income if you made taxable income while in the state.

Thanks.

Would you know how much is the minimum taxable income?

I do not. Look in your area for a thing called a VITA tax site. Usually through the United Way. Free tax prep if your income is at least reasonable.
