I'd say you need a 20 footer
Sounds like you need a taller ladder.
You can rent ladders and scaffolding from Lowe's or home Depot
the rest of the detectors in our house take batteries, i can only assume this one is the same? will have to double check.
Imagine having to construct a scaffold to reach a smoke detector…
probably, between me and my husband i dont trust us to get an even taller ladder and scale it safely. It's all strategically located so that we can't get the ladder at the best angle because there's a light fixture right underneath.

Are you certain that it takes a battery and isn't hardwired? Check your electrical panel for a tripped circuit.
If it's particularly old you may need to replace it. That'd be a call to your handyman--or landlord, if renting.
