Once cobbs creek re-opens next year they will have a 9 hole “beginners course.” Walnut lane in roxborough is relatively short.
I’d also recommend Clayton park in Glen mills, about 30 min outside of the city but it’s the perfect place to learn (or re-learn) to golf

I used to golf in high school, but that was about 35 years ago! Would love to get out and hit the links again. I was thinking of starting, though, on a nine hole par three course just to re-orient myself with the game. Anybody know if there’s that kind of a course anywhere nearby?

I mean I can't speak to their management, I don't even know who that is, but from someone who isn't in the industry, the bartenders make a great drink and are super knowledgeable.

I grew up going to Pub Tiki on the 1700 block of Walnut Street in Rittenhouse.

I’m new to this city and the lack of cops on foot patrol was something I noticed almost immediately. Since you say “bring back,” that suggests to me it hasn’t always been like this?

Does Morgan’s pier qualify? Outdoor, on the river, quasi tiki decor, fancy drinks, not outrageously expensive. Occasional good show there too. Didn’t see it mentioned but maybe I don’t know what a real tiki bar is.

Reply to Mad about book bans in school libraries? Philadelphia has a solution - no libraries at all! Only 7/217 schools have libraries for their kids. by youngbuck215
It was 6 until recently. The public school in Chestnut Hill just got a library in October and its only open part-time through volunteer partnerships but not professionally staffed.
We only have FOUR librarians in the whole school district. Terrible. I know we have great public libraries but they are also always understaffed.

I’m paying $85ish/month with I think Progressive? Idk, I shop it around every time it renews and get whoever is cheapest.
But I’m sure part of that is me owning a 15 year old Honda. The max the insurance company could be out for any crash I cause is my liability limit plus like $5k for my car. I’m sure I’d pay a lot more if they stood to lose six figures if I totaled my car.

I actually use an Apollo City scooter quite a bit friend. And I grew up riding my bike all over the city. We were taught that sharing the road doesn’t mean you can ride in the center of the street and slow up buses, trucks, cars, trolleys etc. The new influx interprets it as everyone should crawl at 10mph till they turn off of the street. People who claim to be super outgoing about using their bike or public transit for “most” of their commuting needs still seem to have brought their vehicles to town with them and, even though they may pay for a parking permit, just hoard the same parking spot for an inordinate amount of time. (Sometimes months!) Because a police vehicle or some other delivery vehicle, trash truck, or cab pulls over into the bike lane (usually in consideration of letting traffic pass more easily) doesn’t mean that vehicle should be kicked, spit on, or have some other mischief done to it while bikers/scooters ride by. (Yes this is a thing that happens more often than you’d think.) In the time it takes for some people to stop their bike, pull out their phone, take a photo, write some complaint, and then post it, they could have been blocks past the so called obstruction.
Its alarming any time a pedestrian or bike rider gets injured or killed in an accident. But when I observe more outrage and activism over further enhancing a comfortable and safe biking experience while anti-violence measures gets less energy.. While educating the city’s poor students gets less energy.. Idunno man.
It really has been great to see a lot of the basketball courts and athletic fields around town get long awaited makeovers. But sometimes it seems like ya can’t get the support you need to get the project backed by these newfangled neighborhood associations unless you offer a dog park as a bargaining chip. Or a cumbersome pavement “enhancement”…. Yeah we’ll fix the block but you gotta let us clog the artery. Hahaha. Its slick.

I've been to Carnegie Mellon and it is right next door to Pitt if I remember correctly. I didn't see any poor neighborhoods around those universities, but I was only there for a weekend and this was about 7 or 8 years ago. We stayed in a hotel near Pitt and it was not anything luxury but I didn't think the neighborhood was comparable to N.Philly.
There are always town-gown problems in cities, especially if they aren't paying taxes on their buildings, which many do not. I think some universities have a better time of it because of the perception of the community, and that sometimes has more to do with what kind of respect university administration and leadership show to the community rather than if they are actually doing anything to benefit or harm.
