Honestly, when we discovered this we would crack nuts just for the huge-heaping-muscles rush, and we didn't even eat half of 'em. But we were kids, so I'm reasonably confident it takes very little.

Technically there's no issue calling it a canal. Canals are usually for the conveyance of boats. Sometimes people will call it a canal when it's fresh water / irrigation.
I'd throw in the word aquifer just so there's no way we can all settle on a single word to call this.

Set in what used to be the port town of Iioka, Chiba. But is now not recognised as a town but a suburb of Asahi city due to population drops from people moving to the city.
You'll see lots of these beautiful places that are frozen in time in music videos because they look great and being abandoned/partially abandoned, they are easy to film in.
