Their tanks ran out of fuel in the first push because of decades of corruption in leadership and not actually having the supplies they had on paper, not because their leader didn't know how to rape and kill good enough.
Also, double check your history books there. They tried to kill Hitler many many times, there where multiple teams working on cutting the head off the snake for years.

I was there today! It was wild when they were filming this. Told us we couldn’t take photos and had to walk around the property to get to certain buildings. There were props outside the buildings for a few days afterwards too. My friend got to interview Pedro accidentally. He just wanted to talk to some of the production team and Pedro ended up coming to talk to him. He showed me some photos he snagged of the inside of the main building which was the hospital scene in last episode. I was shocked at how dirty it was in the photos and then going back after the weekend being impressed at how clean and normal it looked inside. Very cool stuff

They also came to the realization that it was better to leave him in place because he was too hands-on with all aspects of the war and causing them to be inefficient. When that happened during the timeline of the war, I don’t remember, but they eventually did just leave him go for a while.
