I've never even heard of this place, but from what I'm seeing it looks really nice inside. Why did it become a dead mall?

It's really nice inside, but it was a combination of bad timing and not great location. Malls were already on the decline when it opened, and it's a bit out of the way for most people. Those closer to the city want to avoid 28 and might as well hit up Ross Park mall. New Kensington and tarentum are closer, but aren't the wealthiest communities and evidently didn't want to go to the mall enough.

I was there last month. It's pitiful. The only cool thing is, the janitors & security guards now get to zoom around full speed on their Segways since there's no one to run into.

I remember when it was being built, it was gonna "revitalize the area". They were going to add a water park & go-kart track too!

Its still bigger than Highlands Mall was. Highlands Mall had 1 floor, in a T-Shaped mall. I remember laughing when it opened because they had a "You are here" sign at the entrance.... just in case you got lost, I guess. Fashion Bug, Waldenbooks, an Organ/Piano Store, an Arcade, Furniture store, Hallmark store, a GNC, a jewelry store, J&S Pizza (a staple around here) and I think a Radio Shack? Definitely showing my age with that one.

Now its a Walmart. I think there's still a sign for it off Exit 16 Northbound on 28?

I still go there just to eat at TJs and then walk off my meal to the comic store and make a loop.

It has a Macy’s still. I wish the big borders was still there with the coffee shop in it. Same with Ross park. Used to be a borders over where Nordstrom rack is.

It was a really great mall for a few years after it opened. I might be slightly biased as I was in 5th/6th grade then and it was the first time I was old enough + we had enough money for my mom to give me $20 and let me wander while she took her time shopping or whatever. Would always get a pretzel and some random stuff at Claire's or a Webkinz. Then go look at the hermit crabs at that one hippie store. Movie theatre was great too.

AH Yes! I use to buy my comic books there.

It was a treat when we'd go to the Mall for my sister's piano lessons, Mom would stop at that corner shop & get us those Pina Colada smoothies, and if we begged enough, we'd get those cinnamon toothpicks too.

That mall was doomed the day they broke ground. We only ever went there when my kids were little because they had a great play area and great Santa at Xmas, which was never crowded, because no one goes there! No one lives there and no one is moving there. If you’re going to drive to the north suburbs to shop, Ross Park and mcKnight road has literally everything already.
