Here's the thing. When you sell or pawn jewelry, they give you the going rate for raw gold (by weight) minus their markup. Doesn't matter if it's a nugget you found in a river in Colorado or a piece that was hand crafted by the House of Tiffany. Weight. Disappointment.

Exactly. The notion of a walkable city is a great idea, but it has to be planned that way from the start. It's too late to retroactively change, in my opinion.

As-is, it's potentially fatal to travel by bike because there is many roads without adequate sidewalks.... Let alone bike lanes

Most ppl in pvd didn't vote for him. The majority (~58%) of the D primary votes were split between Ceurvo and LaFortune. Since there's no way pvd would vote R the ofc Smiley won the general w 94%

edit to add: primary voter turnout was terrible like 14%(?). So literally: no one voted for him.

Do you actually think it's possible to make Providence suitable for traveling without cars? You need a car or a bus pass to get around. A bike isn't gonna get it done for long distances. Plus a lot of bikers use the sidewalk instead of the bike lane, even on roads WITH the bike lanes.

It's weirdly unlike GoLocal not to link their related stories when it'd maybe bolster the point but I've found the following:

- A brawl last week at a charter school that had upwards of 15 people involved

- Two thirteen year olds at another charter school being arrested for having knives.

- A fight at Central High School last week where one student had a knife and didn't use it.

- A fight in early December at Central again where a kid was getting beaten up, pulled out a knife and ended up injury the principal that grabbed and tried to disarm him. GoLocal called a stabbing. WPRI made it seem more like he was just inadvertently cut on the arm.

None of that is good, but the way it's senationalized with a first-sentence allusion to the ACI is pretty over the top, even by GoLocal's standards.

Most democrats are moderate tbh

Joe Biden is a great example of this.

He literally voted to overturn Roe vs. Wade when Reagan was president.

He called for an invasion of Iraq as early as 1998.

He sided with Bush and voted to invade Afghanistan

He sided with Bush and voted to invade Iraq

In 2021, he rounded up thousands of black haitians refugees and violently deported him.

Yet in 2022, he called for 100,000 ukranian (white) refugees

That was where he lost me.

It depends on the metrics used for justification. My metric is safety. What are the best and worst neighborhoods in Providence based on property and violent crime statistics as well as personal experience. If my metric was race or national origin, yes, ranking neighborhoods best and worst would be problematic. But really, I just want to go to bed and not wake up at 3 in the morning to check if my car still has four windows.

The West End is hit or miss depending on the street really.

The area between Cranston St and Westminster is nice.

If you don't mind sharing what street or general area are you on?

I'd look in the armory district, the area surrounding Dexter park. Also check out parts of federal hill. Closer to Broadway. I use to live there and never had any issues.

I have lived on the Southside for 5 years between Elmwood and Broad. Real neighborhood. No issues with crime myself despite the persistent negative stereotypes… petty stuff I’m sure happens everywhere… packages taken off front porch etc..

We've lived in Fox Point for almost 8 years. Personally have had no issues with safety or break-ins, though I know of many others who have suffered from break-ins (usually due to leaving AC units in first floor windows.) Keeping windows closed and locked while away or over night is a must anywhere in the city. We walk to downtown from Fox Point almost every day, at all times of day and night.

Larry Pierce helped me buy a duplex in North Providence and then sell it several years later. He was incredibly patient with me and very informative on all things that need to be considered. He’s also been doing this for a long time so he has a lot of useful connects. I’d feel bad if I didn’t shout him out because he did so well for my weirdo self.
