Good luck. We’ve had problems with the city before, they so hard to get a hold of. Keep making claims through the 311 they tend to respond to that. Insurance is a nightmare, we had a ceiling collapse, and they refused to pay. And so did our landlord. We called about 10 lawyers, no responses.

The system is sooo broken. The center for justice stopped returning our calls, we’re out $7k that no one wants to Pay for, and we can’t even find a lawyer to help us.

Don’t give up and keep trying! I wish I had better answers for you, but I don’t :/ I understand your frustration though

Few ideas:

max 1 bed means many of these might be studios (but im unfamiliar with this app)

Areas like South Providence, Broad street/south of Broad, Olneyville, and parts of Smith Hill can be hit or miss and some areas are super loud/bustling. These zipcodes sometimes also have astronomically high car insurance to account for and some other costs associated with risk assessment. I've never lived in Boston, but I guess similar risk assessment to like a Roxbury or Dorchester.

I would never recommend someone live downtown unless they needed to be steps from the commuter rail or worked next door. It's extremely inconvenient to host friends there since parking sucks, most of the businesses close by 5, and a lot of it is just underutilized relative to the other neighborhoods everyone lives in.

Finally, what is listed and what you can actually rent has a valley between it. A lot of listings out there that need to be taken down, have 50 emails already, or a 30 person open house. So a lot of these affordable units have steep competition and are more like a raffle. Eventually, the price peaks and the competition filters out, but you'd need to get closer to 2k to see units that have vacancy for more than a weekend.

The biggest culprit in any old apartment is a draft, often via old windows and non-insulated exterior walls. Here are two inexpensive solutions that you can install yourself and can potentially save you a bundle. I use these in my apartment and they work.

Window kit

This is a good write up. I know this area really well and what type of people live here.

For those of you who are interested to move to places like Smith Hill and want to live in a 2 to 3 floor apartment. This is a good write up. I know this area really well and who lives there.

This is the nonsense you will have to deal with just because you want to live in the city. This is the multicultural diversity nonsense you will get. You will be roommates with people who have different cultural norms than you. If you value peace and quiet this aint the place. There are people here who blast music in their house or cars as soon they wake up, not including any other noise from vehicles or makeshift car garages.

Smith Hill went into white flight right around the 80's as they started to bring in refugees from Laos and Cambodia after the Vietnam War, those communities have remained in tact there up 2018-2019 as even a majority of them have moved out , the only ones left either own a home or living in cheap apartments. Now you have a bunch more Hispanics moving in , as you can see the increase in cars on the street and noise , there's also a quasi homeless shelter across the street from 7-11, I never in 30 years have seen Smith Hill like this. You also have ghetto retards from other areas moving in as well.

I remember seeing one triple decker with all Southeast Asians occupying it, it happen to be gang hang out but surprisingly shit didn't hit the fan until the landlord let these really trashy black and white trash people move in. I honestly think the landlord got some kickback from the city to house these low life trash drug addicts from the burbs. A poor working class family just wants peace and quiet but now you have these losers.
