As per their Instagram Post

"Warning, this will be a long and sensitive read.

It's been a while since I've felt this angered and offended, granted being in the service industry it does come with expectations that we are put in difficult situations on a regular basis, however we've been pretty lucky that this community has accepted us and our culture with open arms.

This morning, one of our staff was treated with utter disrespect and racist stereotypical comments were spoken towards our staff member. Unfortunately we did not get this person's name since in the 4.5hrs she stayed with us she never made a purchase.

Yes, it is our policy that if you are going to be sitting in our store, you are expected to make a purchase. However, we do not enforce that, as many guests often come in, meet a friend, have complimentary water and depart.

However, as with every single other business on this planet - large or small - you cannot bring in outside food or drink - and certainly not from a competitor down the street (yes we've seen this happen). While I can only wonder why anyone feels entitled to demand a seat in our store for no cost, I can assure you that you will find other business establishments (corporate or small) equally unwilling to let you do the same. It is common sense, and common courtesy.

To the individual who insulted our staff with racist comments, if you are reading this, the following msg is directed at you. Your perception of diversity must be as narrow as your sense of taste and common decency, as many of our guests and nearly half of our staff are non-Caucasian. Many of our staff are bilingual and represent over 5 countries of origin.

I am sorry your taste in beverages is so limited, but I'm truly sad that your awareness of people is so much less developed, today was the first and last time you lingered in our space with your dog for 4.5hrs, and drank our hot water and used our toilets for free, please don't come back again, you have been banned for life."

your only real risk here, assuming you use common sense, is getting hit by a car.

there aren't really any spots in providence i would call unsafe to walk through, from a crime perspective. not that it doesn't happen, but overall random street crime is incredibly rare. the biggest risk you will face is bad drivers.

it's not pretty over there, but there are a ton of families in that area

Since no one addressed the question re: the bus: other than subway / commuter systems in major cities, in the US public transit systems tend to be used by those who have no other choice for transportation, vs those who have a choice and choose the bus. This is not to say it’s unsafe, but if you take RIPTA you will run into some interesting characters.

I spent about a decade as an expat and it was one of the best experience of my life - whether you’re here for work or something else I hope you enjoy your time. If you get homesick try to find a local expat group - the next best thing to finding your countrymen is commiserating with a group of outsiders on the idiosyncrasies of the place you’ve landed.

Are you on River north of admiral? South of admiral is a really fine area.

I only drive through the part of river ave north of admiral. I don't think you'll have any problems if you do walk around. It is dumpy up there though. Go to PC and walk the track.

It’s plenty safe, it’s just a little rough around the edges aesthetically. Also if you’re on the part of River Ave that’s in Wanskuck you’re probably a 15ish minute walk to Wanskuck Park, which is very pleasant (especially if you like dogs).

Be careful with car traffic. Lots of distracted drivers, lots of drivers who don’t care, and lousy infrastructure all around.

There are streets that are so busy and have no crosswalks that I don’t dare walk across.

But I am on older side, so your experience may be different.

I believe this is true for the whole state (and country).

Edit: to give you perspective, wanskuck has a walk score of 70 (100 is tops) and is considered very walkable.

It might not be the most convenient place to walk around but other than traffic safety you should be alright. I used to live around Wanskuck/Charles and liked walking up Woodward Road around Wanskuck park and beyond. Be careful at stop signs, drivers don't feel like they actually need to stop at them here.

Welcome to Providence!

I live in Mount Pleasant and walk through Elmhurst and Smith Hill every day. In general, you'll be fine most hours of the day. I feel uncomfortable walking by myself downtown late at night, but if I lived in your area, I'd be fine walking to and from restaurants.

Use some street smarts, though. Be aware of your surroundings, and assume that drivers are not paying attention and aren't expecting to see pedestrians.

We are facing steep rent increases here. Besides the fact moving here would add to that housing crisis, I can't promise you will find the rents here affordable in a year or two. It costs a lot of money to move, I'd look for a cheaper state.

Elmhurst is safe, River Ave. may not be pretty but the side streets near Lasalle, PC, Smith St are all pretty safe. I would consider the area in between PC, Mount Pleasant High School and Chalkstone to be walkable during the day

If you move to Providence, you will be inflicting increased cost of living on the working people here. Our rents have been going up exponentially even while our population is declining. Please be aware that your choices have consequences for the community you seek to enter.

What about knights of Columbus hall or vfw...place like that. Some of them are nice if you search. The one in north providence is nice (there are two knights' halls in np, and one is better) cheap rental, then hire a caterer separately. I've done this for a brunch pre covid. It cost me 2k. With liquor. And the caterer did the decorations, table clothes etc too...

St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Pawtucket has a social hall they rent out. It's down the street from the church and doesn't give any church vibes at all (which IMO was a wise investment decision on their part. They make money renting it out.) It has a commercial kitchen and bar which you can use or not. Best kept secret in room rentals around here as far as I am concerned.

Also search this sub because this question has been asked before.

Yep, hope it helps. I'm planning a wedding so I am all too familiar with catering costs and restaurant spaces (not this region). With inflation, these costs are much higher than they were even a few years back.

Since it's a brunch, one idea might be to find a meeting space like others are suggesting and then cater something in like panera. That might not fit the vibe of the event you are planning, though, but it will avoid increasing the budget or cutting attendees. A thread here the other day was discussing affordable caterers.

Make sure to find out things like food minimums, venue tax Providence might tack on, and whether the location you want to meet only allows you to use a certain caterer for this event.

Good luck.
