This is a common problem on locations which were once gas stations w/underground holding tanks. In most cases those fuels have seeped out of the tanks and contaminated the ground. To eradicate the issue requires large sums of money in a process called bio-remediation. They actually flood the land with living organisms which eat, (absorb) the toxins. Some service fees can easily rise into the millions.

Just call the police and let them know. Ask them what you should do.

That happened to me too. Before I even knew that it had been done, I got a call from the police telling me that they had found my stolen car. I looked in the driveway and told them my car was sitting there. We figured it out and laughed.

As others have stated, you will want to report this incident quickly to your local police department. You'll need a copy of the police report to obtain a replacement(s). You can find out more here on the DMV website -- https://dmv.ri.gov/registrations-plates-titles/license-plates/lost-or-damaged-plates Please contact the DMV administration using this online form -- https://dmv.ri.gov/locations-hours/questions-feedback if you begin to receive notices for traffic violations (via traffic cameras) as the staff can provide a letter to submit to police/courts to get fines waived.

My neighbor got arrested by several state troopers about a week or so ago, the only thing I caught was the staties unscrewing the license plates on the car. It seems to be happening quite a bit, 100% report it stolen. They seem to be figuring it out.

I didn't love the location anyway. I'm all for giving North Main a come-up but down there...eh. That's car hell and not going to break up any time soon, not sure I want to sit outside at a picnic table admiring the traffic congestion.

You can submit an online police report.

https://www.providenceri.gov/police/citizens-online-police-reporting-system/

They could be using them for anything from stealing tools from Home Depot to a drive by shooting so getting that report in before it happens you you don't become a suspect. Then you will need to use that report to go to the DMV and get new plates.

I've only been there once but I'll bring it up bc no one has, Jake and Johnny's on Fed Hill is incredible. Zazz is a great bartender, super chill place, connected to Napolitano's pizza for food too

Report it to your dmv, police, and insurance.

This happened to my cousin a super long time ago in Boston. Someone stole one of her plates from the museum parking lot while she was visiting with her son and she didn’t notice. Then got a call super late that night that the plate was found on a car used in some crime.

OP report it, you're gonna need to anyways to get them replaced. But report them now if you haven't already so you're bit dragged into something like a drive-by or a home invasion or something bad. They might even have a car that looks like yours to pass off as you. Shouldn't take long to report and get the report quickly and easily.
