Maybe she didn't understand why and was trying to justify it to herself?

I don't know, of course, and I'm sorry that you're going through this. It doesn't seem reasonable to break up over a miscommunication when she noticed you were putting in effort. She could have just clarified or given you a chance after she clarified. So that's why it makes me wonder if there's something different/deeper/more confusing going on.
