My long term partner and I are in our late 40s. We are finally buying a house together though we have lived together for 4 years now splitting rent. Currently he pays water and electric, I pay internet and groceries. Although he makes more than me by a small amount, we have agreed to split the new mortgage in half and he wants to really make sure other expenses are truly equal. I am not interested in merging bank accounts, because I know I am more of a penny pincher than he is, and seeing the costs of things that I feel are wasteful will definitely create long term friction. (It's worth noting we are both doing quite well, but I grew up very very poor and I will always be more conservative with spending.) So for others in this place, do you sit down monthly? Have a separate pooled account for expenses? What has worked for you and what didn't?
