Alright those of you who moved from Buffalo, what do people in even colder climates do? I doubt someone in Buffalo just accepts the fact that their electric/power bill is 300-600 November-April?

Do they have different heating systems?

We have electric heat and after our December bill ($333) we lowered the heat from 68 to 60. Insulated all our windows and did everything we could to keep the heat in. We saved a whopping $8. The bill we got yesterday was $325, which was shocking because we feel like it hasn’t been warm in our house and the heat isn’t even blowing that much, but the usage on those really cold arctic blast days was crazy high. 2 bedroom, less than 1000 sq feet, but we do have an attic that has insulation falling out of it. I have no solution to it, just commiserating with all who have high electric bills.

Invest in a smart thermostat that can report if your emergency heat is kicking on (like an ecobee). Used that report to have my HVAC serviced and part replaced to correct an issue with it when I had no idea it was kicking on for such long times.

My ecobee has saved me about 23%+ comparing alike-external temp times with last year on monthly reporting.

Also get it linked to beestat for best reporting.

Siamese parent here. I adopted my kitty as an adult cat from a rescue organization-poor thing was a stray. But while I was looking, I saw a few Siamese kittens at the usual places like SPCA and RAL, etc. They are not normal cats-this is not necessarily a bad thing and why I love them. They’re very loving and loyal but can be loud as hell and are very smart and opinionated. Seconding what gentleghost said.

Happy to oblige because I think the situation is pretty funny and I’d be intrigued too. It’s my first time experiencing a ghost/spirit/whatever. I wasn’t a believer before but like, what else am I supposed to do? There’s only so much I can ignore the footsteps going up and down the stairs when my cat is looking directly at the stairs and then back at me like “you hearing this shit?!”

So I assigned Casper a gender because he seems like a mischievous but usually fun guy. He makes a lot of racket in the kitchen, like random sounds. Once it was the sound of someone squeezing a Solo cup. Like, that’s a very distinctive sound unlike old house sounds or thumps. He also knocked a huge clock off the wall and I wasn’t thrilled to sweep up the glass, but that’s the worst he’s done. The bedside table incident this week was the closest to me he’s ever been and had it happened a few years ago, I would have lost my shit. But we’re cool now so I was like “well played, Casper” and rolled over.

The house was built in 1896. A longtime neighbor told me that a loooong time ago it was an unpermitted bar for gay patrons. Other than that lore, I don’t know anything about previous residents. It was a rental before I bought it in 2016.

So yep. That’s the scoop. A woman, her black cat, and a ghost all happily coexisting in Church Hill.

Edit to add: Nice to hear from you friend!!
