Freight trains carry more than coal and grain, and robbery is probably one of their lowest concerns. As we just saw in Ohio, they carry hazardous materials. They ship nuclear waste via rail. A targeted attack on a train like that at a sensitive location could have huge implications.

Bottom line, there really isn't a reason for freight train operators to publish their train locations. Amtrak does it because people ride their trains or are picking people up from train stations so its advantageous to know. Theres just no real reason the general public needs to know where freight trains are.

Don't know the pre sale code, but I wouldn't stress about buying tickets early to a show at Brown's. It's an island, it won't sell out. Stop by Plan 9 and buy the tickets there to avoid the online service fee.

Arms on trucks with uniform carts will increase the efficeincy of pickups, reduce the amount of staff needed, and expand access to recycling. A fair number of people only have bins, and don't want to carry something to the curb, alley, etc. Bins will (hopefully) make recycling more accessible, increase the volume of recycling, and the number of people who do recycle.

I’m a Virginia boy to the bone, and I consider NC our “sister state” so…in the spirit of giving credit where it’s due, North Carolina’s beaches AND mountains are objectively bigger and badder. The Outer Banks has the best surfing on the eastern seaboard and NC has more 6,000+ foot peaks than any state east of the Rockies. Virginia’s Blue Ridge feels downright civilized in comparison. Virginia is so damned sweet and approachable, though, and we have the Shenandoah Valley. I’ve been to 45 states and “The Great Valley” is truly special. In his 1992 album opener “Into the Cornfields” Colin Hay (of ‘I come from the land down under’ fame) sings of driving through the American south on tour. “We’re in Virginia now, it’s beautiful and green, the hills and valleys and open skies, it’s the best we’ve ever seen.”

My apologies, sleep deprived, it is worth the humidity to stay. Also good ratings on a few other things, also we already know how much the cost range of stuff will be ... unlike others that we know who have moved and are going to areas they cannot afford even within VA itself, because the pricing is different. We can afford RVA and we decided we will stay in RVA. We will adjust as the economical impact adjusts here.

I've read that theory, but the amtrak schedules are obviously public knowledge, so how is that safe?

Perhaps industrial trains have unique security concerns, such as hobos (and transient murderers) riding the rails? I can't imagine someone foolish enough to attempt a real modern train robbery for raw coal or grain. Frankly, I don't see how knowing a trains schedule could significantly improve your odds of a successful robbery. The logistics of that operation are inconceivable. Any cargo worth that effort either wouldn't be traveling via rail in the first place, or would be seriously guarded (like Kim Jong Une's train).

Sorry - what are the specific security concerns to which you were referring?

I don't know what kind of straw man argument you are trying to draw here, but I can only conclude by your sympathizer comments that you are either friends/ family to Johnny or that you yourself have a child porn habit.

To compare drug addiction to child pornography is absolutely inappropriate and wrong. Especially since victims of sex crimes are prone to drug and alcohol addiction. Buying and using drugs do not equate to buying photographs and videos of children being raped or abused.

This article is such bullshit. This is much worse than initially reported and RTD is giving him the “poor white man had so much potential this was just a minor lapse in judgement” treatment.

Embarrassing. He was always a POS. Clearly more than we ever knew. He was NO pillar of his community. He was nuisance, and an embarrassment to this city and this article in infuriating!

Agreed, but I still want the specific pic I described in OP. I live in the fan, and can't justify hanging around the canal all day just to pick up the train patterns.

Side note, I'm also planning to shoot (with a camera) the nearby heron rookery, now till March apparently being the optimal time of year for that (from what I've read).

But in both cases (trains and herons) the plan is to (as much as possible) pick the best times to increase the chances of optimal photos. I enjoy planning a good project - I'll appreciate the final product more.

That is helpful info. I should look for railway maps to see where the trains are coming from. Then buy an analog radio scanner to pick up broadcast axel counter reports. Should be able to estimate the arrival time based on published average train speeds (for a system consisting of the reported # of axels) and distance from the counter. Thanks 👍
