Property taxes were 9% higher in FY22, which is about double the normal rate of increase. And they are on track for the same increase this year which is substantial. However, Education got an almost 12% bump last year and is budgeted for almost 8% this year, and the property tax rate was chipped down from %0.87 to %0.85, which I know is not a lot in the grand scheme of things, but I don't see Richmond or Chesterfield dropping their rates at all. And Henrico is still lower than both of them.

You can work through the previous budgets and actuals to see where the money is being spent, although only big buckets, not detail like salary vs. programming. I'm sure there is a lot of room for improvement, I know it sounds like I am defending Henrico, but it's not that so much as I have lived in all three of these areas, and I think that Henrico simply does a better job.

Having said all that - op is smart to appeal this assessment. Something seems way off there.

Total wine has it and you can order it online so you don’t have to worry about beating anyone to It. That said it’s like a buck a bottle which seems steep? No idea what is usually costs

Edited to add it actually looks like they have liter bottles for 2 dollars too

Publix has it for 13 bucks for a 12

And wegmans has it

We are not writing a check to a billionaire, you know it’s not that simple. This agreement and business between MiLB and the city is mutually beneficial, they would not engage in it if it were not. Keeping up our end of the bargain is the least shitty thing we could go in order to keep reaping the benefits of this agreement. You keep reducing the whole thing to some slogan about “fuck the rich” which is ignoring the ground rules (pun sorry) that were set out when the franchise came to Richmond

Godspeed. Elwood Thompson usually has them (but priced higher than other stores). Kroger is hit or miss, people wipe it out as soon as they restock. My husband is obsessed with these and we have an agreement that if I find a case in the wild I buy them immediately

My weekend started yesterday when I was blessed with 80° weather. I’m still pretending Saturday doesn’t exist. We’re going to eat soups, listen to Bobby Vinton on vinyl, and curse the weather gods for cold rain.

You could hire more teachers or pay existing teachers more to retain them. You could provide after school programs that will keep kids out of trouble in those crucial hours between when school lets out and when their parents get home. Enhance the lunch programs so that we're providing healthy, good food. All kinds of things.

Native Plate was good, first time going. Liked the apps we had, edamame, gochujang cauliflower and vegetable curry puffs. Our entrees were great too, for vegetarians the Indonesian fried rice is great, but their spice levels are either lackluster or tailored to people who think a dash of black pepper is spicy. I had level 3(highest level) and it wasn’t even as spicy as the gochugang cauliflower.

Regardless the food was great, the bar situation however, was so slow. There was 1 bartender on a Friday night during rush hour. Full bar, full restaurant minus 2 tables. Not exaggerating, our first drink order, which we ordered with apps, came after both our apps and dinner. I can’t even be mad at the bartender but dam management has to figure that balance out.

Went to chum chum onigiri for a snack. The onigiri was not as good as it was at their old location. Rice was dry, meat was sparse, the whole thing basically crumbled as you ate it. Chicken katsu onigiri wasn’t even chicken katsu, just some cooked chicken. New location is cute, but the onigiri isn’t worth the price ($5.25).

Edit:

Chao tian fu next to sushi king on broad street is great. They just opened and do hot pot and dry pot (by the pound?). Idk they have fixed menu sets but when I went, they charged by the pound, max of $18.99 I think. I think lunch is cheaper than dinner.

Only other place I’ve had dry pot around here is at cheng du, and this is just as good; can choose your own ingredients and spice level. 1 bowl of rice per dry pot. They charge for water because they only have bottles $1.50.

Literally part of the reason the AAA Braves left was bc the diamond was in disrepair. Not the whole reason, but a part of it. That was years ago.

Talhimer has some massive plan to purchase the whole complex from the city and renovate it into a whole area. Similar to the Battery and Truist Park for the MLB Braves in Atlanta (highly recommend visiting if you haven’t and are a baseball fan, great atmosphere) But that plan is definitely years away from ever being put in motion, and by then the squirrels may be gone.

This narrative that all money should go to schools, and that they would somehow all of a sudden produce much better results if only they had more money, is a joke. Tell me how the $3.5mm will be allocated to actually produce better academic results. There already have been many tax increases in the city "for the schools."
