Reply to Living in RVA without a car by [deleted]
I live downtown without a car, the Pulse and the #5 bus serve most of my transit needs. I am fortunate enough to work within walking distance so I don't use the buses to get to anything too crucial. Whenever I have to leave city limits (Short Pump, airport) I use a rideshare service. Express GRTC buses are really only for people who live in the suburbs and work downtown, they only run during AM PM rush hours and then only in the direction to transport suburban office workers so that isn't really an option. An electric bike would certainly open your options!

Reply to Gluten free donuts? by [deleted]
Anna B’s gluten free bakery has them. They are a cake donut though. Also, not fresh, but we love the Katz donuts in the freezer section at the grocery store. The donut holes are so good that we fight over who gets the majority of the box. Wegmans and Target have them.

Don't you know? That keeps the poors out, makes it a much more pleasant experience for the upper middle class, keeping the harsh realities of a system that utterly fails more people than a country as wealthy as ours easily ignorable. It's fine to have some folks panhandling at major intersections, you can give a granola bar and a water bottle to those folks and pat yourself on the back and consider your charity for the month done. But if the poors start shopping at your favorite store, they'll start lowering prices and offering more inexpensive options, put stuff on sale. How are you gonna feel well-to-do when you don't have 9 options over 4 brands of overpriced scented candle?

Oooh yeah that's clever. You could turn priority lanes into tracks in some places, especially if you could bury the lines when the priority lanes ended.

That's because the benefits are inversely proportional to income. Basically it benefits the poors more than everyone else, and we can't have that. They need to pick themselves up by their bootstraps and buy a car. /s

Yeah but those places have higher median wages to match, usually. As it stands the cost of housing here, while cheap compared to a lot of places, still well out-strips a lot of native Richmonders' earnings. This is only being exacerbated by remote workers from out of state and NoVa coming in with their "modest" budgets of $500k+.

Jackson Ward, no car. If you can get what you need to eat from the Krogs, Whole Foods, and Publix it is fine. Just check which grocery stores you need, and how far they are. I'm WFH and can't justify getting a car due to the added expense, and the fact that biking to the stores helps keep me in shape, when I work such a sedentary job.

They have a very “patriotic” online persona, including very strange 9/11 posts every year and lots (and lots and lots and lots) of flag pictures, which some people find endearing but others find offputting

Yep. I'm very much looking forward to trapezium opening this spot. Not that it's super far to go to get to breweries elsewhere in town, but having one right down the road, and another option for going out after work that isn't in shockoe bottom or Patrick Henry is very welcome.

>They killed their last routes a few years ago
There are a couple active GRTC routes in Chesterfield, mostly near the County/City line but they're there. 1A, 2B, & 3B
You'd need to make park and rides with security for them to be viable anywhere else in the county.

Yeah, literally was thinking Forest Hill just to the East as well. Rentals are remarkably reasonable there, and it literally abuts the south bank of the James and that incredible park system. Museum District still has affordable apartments on a single income if you look around for a bit. Good luck!

I frequently have to drive through Chesterfield to work and that whole county has its head in the sand regarding the future of development. Tons of new shopping centers with no pedestrian access or any regards to ANYTHING besides a car. So fucking stupid.

Reply to Richmond school district to rename Binford, Cary, and Ginter Park for $150k. by Charlesinrichmond
Why can’t they just do what King County did where they changed their namesake but kept the exact same name? It’s not like that exact combination of words used in the schools’ names are the problem.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_County,_Washington#History
Seems like you could find a Cary who’s had a net positive impact on the world with a week of research
