Yeah I think it's underrated that white flight happened because racists didn't want to live next to another race...

It's like when weirdos say shit like "the United States Postal Service is losing $XX million a year!" Like, no, it's not "losing" anything, it's a public service and it COSTS MONEY TO RUN IT. Not everything needs to exist to turn a profit, god damn

I'm a remote, car-free individual as well. I haven't had any problems living here due to being vehicle free. The bus system isn't perfect, but it gets the job done well enough. I can walk to get just about anything I'd want or need. While I do have a pretty liberal definition of walking distance, with an e-bike, you should be fine.

I live near Willow Lawn and don’t have a car, perfectly fine without it.

Excellent and detailed writeup on the meeting here http://www.rvadirt.com/blog/2022/11/22/rps-recap-112122 including great pieces like council making zero presentation of details, making up the (lowball) cost estimates from thin air, and then voting on it with no chance for review or fact gathering. I agree that naming things after Confederates is trash but these aren't just symbolic votes, they need practical and prioritized plans attached.

idk
but I was driving out to Glen Allen right before sundown and caught what looked like a dark smoke cloud coming up from somewhere in the neighborhood

Excellent guidance. I’d add that Carver is exceptionally well set for no car.

Thank you for posting this. I had some harsh words for the intersection along Cox Road which is a deathtrap for pedestrians trying to cross the street with no crosswalk or light.

The busses are pretty hit or miss, but biking for transportation here is pretty great when you get past the aggro and angry drivers.

I do this already living downtown and it is very very doable (esp with you having an e bike) Richmond is relatively small (less than 5 miles from west to east). Dm me if you have any questions about logistics or tips.

Hard to beat Charlottesville for access to hiking. Me and my partner https://postimg.cc/grSgwRkY went for a short hike near there today.

Hm they must have toned it down over time bc theres like 4 pictures total in the last year that I’m seeing with a flag and nothing really iffy in the posts (unless it’s in the comments but idk)
Thanks for the follow up though! I went there bc they said they ship in bagels from NY and I was craving an egg everything with cream-cheese. Normally I just make coffee at home and cant bring myself to buy a $10 bag of coffee.

I was born and lived most of my life in Richmond. I moved to Charlottesville a little over 3 years ago and I really enjoy it. I was single in Richmond (in my 20’s so dating was a different ballgame), got married, moved to Cville and got divorced, so just recently did the dating thing in my mid/late thirties. It was fine - I guess I felt like there was a pretty decent pool of candidates in cville.
I will say cost of living and walkability is much better in richmond. There are lots of great neighborhoods with varying degrees of walkability and the apartments are going to be more affordable there. Also if you want to eventually buy you get a lot more for your money there. Cville is dumb when it comes to housing.
I’d say both are dog friendly. Richmond has the James river park system which is great for dogs, plus lots of dog friendly breweries. Charlottesville is surrounded by wineries, most of which are dog friendly, but you’re going to have to drive to them.
They have very different vibes. Richmond is definitely more urban, whereas cville is a small liberal town surrounded by some pretty red areas.

The median income of the city is $25k and the average home price is $330k. You’re right — but the problem is not the cost of living, it’s the shockingly low median income for a city in such a great location with so much to offer its inhabitants. I’m not saying that it shouldn’t be frustrating for native Richmonders — I understand how it would be. I’m just saying it’s not objectively expensive in an era where there are a lot of high-earning remotely working individuals who routinely relocate to lower cost of living areas.

Sorry to hear about your infertility struggle💜 I think Richmond is great for single women in terms of lifestyle - I participate in a lot of crafty hobbies and I always meet a lot of single 30-40 year old women in those groups who are living their best life - friend vacations, meet ups, concerts, etc. And the beach is still close !
