We probably won't know the right answer to that question for a few decades from now.
Once fecal microbiota transplantation becomes a thing (for IBS/Chron's/C. difficile colitis patients) and we collect longitudinal data of donors and recipients over a span of decades will we have a probable answer to that question.

I'm in camp causation.. but I think the illness is affecting your sleep patterns and not the sleep patterns mkaing you sick.

There is a difference between sympathetic nervous system arousal and 'anxiety,' per se. Anxiety is an emotion and always has a cognitive and behavioral component.

It could also make you sick less... just because it is meaningful for a statistical amount of people doesn't mean it is meaningful for you.
