Great gray owls can find and capture voles hidden beneath almost two feet of snow. Scientists buried speakers in snow to discover owls hover over the snow to locate low-pitched sounds such as voles digging tunnels, and that their broad faces help with this task.

Wind power is built at an increasing pace but its effect on nature and animals is poorly known. Researchers investigated the impact of wind turbines on bat presence and activity in Finnish boreal forests. The results indicate that wind power repels bats and drives them away from important habitats.
