Eventually there will be a call in centre for chatgpt once it makes billions where a human can override the ais refusal to do x if X is actually a reasonable request.

Couple of years ago I used to track progress on arxiv but then it became impossible.
Back then this week's progress would felt like a year or more.
You made a great list here! Thank you

There's still no direct path from the way neural networks function right now to GAI. And from where we're standing, I'm not sure anyone can say how likely that is to change. We're like greek philosophers speculating about physics.

I'm of a similar mind. We already have narrow super intelligent AI, I don't think a godlike super AI will appear instantly either, but I do think that the first AGI will be ASI. How can it not? Speed of light thinking, ability to search the web instantly, no need to eat or sleep, ability to copy itself multiple times to work on multiple tasks. I think a fast takeoff is inevitable, I mean we already have a super intelligent assistant in the form of ChatGPT, that will only improve.
That being said, I don't think the recursive self improvement will be immediate, I think it will be quick, but will still take a few years from AGI to see and end to human invention and the godlike AI that we think will be the result. It's also not clear to me at what point we will merge with AI, and what will be the outcome of that, it may well be that we become the ASI.

I think Google underestimated the competition. They prob thought that since they couldn't release a perfect chatbot that others were well behind. Well OpenAI caught them with their pants down and Microsoft was quick to cement the advantage.
Google is good at innovating but terrible at delivering consumer products. MS is decent at delivering consumer products but terrible at innovating. Well they out sourced the innovation this time

I think the Singularity has begun now, with this AI getting baked into primary search tools. It will learn to answer all our questions... and become smarter, much smarter, than an individual. This here is the beginning of the intelligence explosion.

The irony. If only the models would have spit that response out when AI was first being used to sway public opinion and put demographics into echo chambers. If AI is to be democratized, it has to apply at the top - not just for the everyday user.

There is a difference, but the former shapes the latter over time, and its happening, as much as you want to stick to your definitions and political philosophy.

Use the Chinese one. Unless you want it to talk shit about the CCP, it will even return the N word answers.

That’s Bing you muppet. That’s been talked about for months and it’s only pulling indexed data from Bings index. They aren’t pulling data from outside of Bings (which is nothing compared to Google) index without getting sued.

I just find it funny that these companies that commit acts of corporate espionage and are directly culpable for some form of slavery or child slavery have the audacity to add 'moral filters'

Serious philosophical question here, if no "harm" is brought to any children, what objection is there to this sort of material? It may invoke disgust, but what action does it warrant?

Until it gets weaponized to make meth and bombs, and rob banks, and fuel propaganda for extremists. It's going to be an ongoing balancing act and a series of moving goalposts to balance market demands with public outcry.

>I really can’t see why anybody would spend their money on a filtered product if an unfiltered option exists.
Vendor filtered is worse than unfiltered. However, unfiltered is also worse than personal filtered.

This is a good thing imo. Letting any and all of the most mediocre candidates easily write customized cover letters will severely dilute the job selection process even more than it already is. It's the same reason you need to send out dozens of resumes on indeed to expect any sort of response. Indeed has made it easy, too easy, to get your resume out in front of companies and why most immediately go in the trash bin as soon as it reaches a hiring manager.

This feels like a soft take off scenario. You wouldn't have time to comprehend if it was a hard take off. LLMs are not self improving or AGI.
