As was I. I try to treat people the way I wish I had been treated. That's not to say you don't. For all I know you responded to the bootstraps mentality favorably, and so that's what you believe is helpful to other people.

Don't think that I'm saying that people aren't accountable for their choices. If someone can make a better choice, they should. But sometimes they can't.

I was 12 when that happened. Old enough to remember it well but not old to feel the weight of it that my parents did. People joke about how we bring it up a lot when talking about winter but damn was that shit crazy. Two weeks without power. We put our refrigerated items outside in the snow and ice to keep it cold. You couldn’t go anywhere without everything being encased in two inches of ice. Shit was wack

Their birria tacos are good, I'd say on par with the stuff I've had in TJ. But you should try actual birria at some point. The tacos are good, but birria is a whole experience especially if it's made the way it's supposed to be. With goat, not beef.

It's not a hard recipe, but difficult to perfect. I've tried to impress my friends back home but they're always like "nah, it's missing something" but never can explain what it is.

pho on a tortilla? I'll have to check that out, I'm cautiously skeptical but I'll keep an open mind :)

When I was looking for somewhere to volunteer a couple years back, the city had a bajillion options. You could basically work anywhere from the offices to the parks to the zoo to the ice rink.
