So for those who are unaware Family Matters was a 90's sitcom revolving around a middle class black family living in Chicago, Illinois that was a spin-off to the sitcom Perfect Strangers. One of the most popular characters on that show is Steve Urkel a character who was supposed to be a one time character and then became a reoccurring character until his popularity shot him to be the main character of the whole series.
So I want to know have there been any other cases similar to that where a side character becomes the main character of the series?
