I remember at the time many people saying that they felt bad for 30 Rock because of the unfortunate timing. Studio 60 got more hype and most people thought it would have the better staying power.

On paper it looked that way. Sorkin was just coming off of West Wing and Tina Fey wasn’t a sure thing at this point. While she was on SNL and Mean Girls was a success, to the public she was just the Weekend Update anchor and Mean Girls was more associated with Lohan. This was her first thing where she was front and center. Without seeing either I would have thought Sunset Strip would be the one that survives.
