I love Modern Family but when season 1 began, every character had an incredibly specific sitcom stereotypes. You've got the gay couple, the uptight mom, the ditzy daughter clashing with the smart daughter, the loud and sassy foreign character, the grumpy patriarch. It worked so well because there was enough additional heart in these characters that we saw past the stereotypes. But I feel like this show is one of the rare cases where as it went on, the characters become more 3-dimensional and leaned away from their initial stereotypes. Another show I can see this in is Community. Any other examples of shows that made their characters more complex as they progressed instead of just leaning into their stereotypes?
