It's crazy that this idea seems so obvious and yet the Green Lantern show was in development hell for years before finally landing on this.

My answer to this will always be Ozymandias from Breaking Bad. I've never seen an episode that tied together everything it has built up to across every season and let it all collapse at once like that. It was perfect.

They even both have a major character named Ellie

It’s post Flashpoint so I could see it. Aquaman 2 is as well as that’s obviously not moving into the new continuity so I could see Blue Beetle going either way.

Season 5, Episode 12, “Everyone’s Waiting” of Six Feet Under.
(I’m another that’s been weighing this question since watching TLOU e1s3 because that was one damn fine piece of television. Still in awe.)

How did I not know this was happening? I was patiently awaiting the Mr and Mrs Smith Amazon reboot with him and Phoebie Waller-Bridge.

Yeah, the little twist in that episode is probably what got me hooked on Lost. I could argue for other episodes of that show being the greatest single episode of TV ever, like The Constant, but Walkabout came first and stands as the greatest.

That probably doesn't help. I did finish the series. I plan to read the book. The show seemed unwilling or unable to address the major themes of the book.

I agree with much of what you're saying. I just feel that while the episode itself isn't filler, it does have a bunch of pointless filler in it. The episode could have been so much better by cutting out some of that filler and expanding on the relationship between Bill and Frank, and Joel and Tess. It was a missed opportunity.
IMO the writing was not good, the standout positive was the acting by Murray Bartlett.

It was a decent episode and I hope every episode is at least as good. I think there are essentially two reasons it is being so breathlessly praised:
-
Fans of the game are super happy to see it given the Prestige TV treatment - video games and video game adaptations are rarely taken this seriously. There’s also probably not a small section of TLOU’s gamer audience that don’t often watch shows that place that much emphasis on dramatic storytelling over world building, lore and action - which tend to be the basis of most genre TV shows.
-
The non gaming audience of TLOU probably weren’t expecting a video game adaptation to be given the Prestige TV Treatment and were likely expecting something closer to The Walking Dead or a Marvel show.
Simply put, it deviated from half the audiences expectations and exceeded the other half’s, which has lead to slightly inflated reviews from both.
Add to that a great one off performances by actors loved by both - the gamers love Ron Swanson, the non-gamers loved seeing Murray Bartlett getting his ass are in The White Lotus - and you’ve got a recipe for success, as well as a nagging sense that you’re being pissed on and told it’s raining.

The series has a lot of differences with the book that dragged it out. I read the book after watching the season finale. It's a fast read.

I’ll watch anything Natasha Lyonne is in, she’s such a creative force (don’t know how she didn’t get a Emmy writing nod for s2 of Russian Doll).

Excellent reveal!
What I like most, is none of this feels like something Marvel would do. That was my biggest fear with in developing a shared cinematic universe for DC. And I love the idea of quality over quantity regarding their annual releases.

Twin peaks the pilot. Game of thrones s2 ep9 blackwater. X files season 2 ep5 Duane Barry. Sopranos is my favourite show but I really cant choose there. I either have to mention none or 15 episodes.
