Just watched the always sunny podcast episode with Michael Naughton(the waiter). They talked him playing the straight man in sunny and that was the first time I had heard that term. It got me thinking of others with the first one coming to mind being Tommy Tiernan who plays Gerry in Derry Girls

I’m intrigued, Ritter will be fine but like a lot of shows now we’ll see how the writing is. 50/50 is terrible and doesn’t do proper justice to the original series.

Also why does it have to be AMC? Really don’t want to pay for a other subscription just for this and whatever future Alan Wake show they’re also doing.

I don't frequent it enough to have an opinion, but that was far from the point I was trying to make with this post. I have better things to do than go online to validate my contrarianism.

It's a beloved show that, thus far, hasn't had the same impact on me, so I wanted to ask people who've watched it if the reasons for that are prevalent during its whole runtime, and most of all, consistent and stationary. They seem to not be, so I'll keep watching.

SPOILERs

  1. Picard is dead at the end of the series, replaced by an Android, still old, and it's not acknowledged

  2. The entire core structure clearly changed halfway through the season and they had zero idea what to do with their premonition angle

  3. Picard wasn't a fantastic action hero at 47...watching him survive exploding rooftops at 77 was a huge ask

  4. His character went from intelligent thinker to "whee!"

  5. His crew member kills a man in cold blood and its ok because it was a hard decision for her?

  6. The CGI was cheap

  7. Ripped off Mass Effect's ending, using stock footage

There is more but it's been a while since I suffered through it.

This might be true but also it’s also a much lower commitment work to direct a 45 min episode or two than a full movie or series. Having ‘auteur’ directors do a handful of tv episodes is a great way to book excellent film directors without having to deal with scheduling difficulties that come with shooting a whole movie. According to Rian Johnson the delays on the films that they offered him are all because he’s already booked solid on other projects for the next 3-5 years.

Ben might be the only reason the new Quantum Leap was able to function - which is why he couldn't be stopped before he leaped.

Maybe something even worse happens if Addison leaps instead of Ben? We have seen that she can be a bit more calculating than Ben, where he is a bit more emotional - maybe she would've made a decision that was good for her mission, but not good for everyone? Or maybe Addison killed Martinez (or almost killed him) in a leap, which really fucked things up, so Ian made it up that Addison died in a leap, because two leapers are needed at some point?

Either way, it seems like a military trained leaper was needed (Addison before Ben leaped, Martinez after he leaped).

If their goal is to stop the meltdown, maybe one of them will have to die to succeed - so Martinez is distancing himself from Ben

I was not interested in watching it initially for the reasons you describe, then I binged the first season in a weekend and was hooked, and it's one of my favorite shows. I know you said you're almost through the first season, but still. Overall, taken as a whole the entire series describes kind of a slow burn arc -- it's basically how these characters deal with the '60s, good, bad, and ugly. IMO there is plenty of payoff.

The fact that it moves away is enough for me, regardless of the amount or the speed at which it does that. What I feared is that it's gonna be the same thing throughout. But yeah, if by the back half of S2 nothing has changed for me I'm gonna re-evaluate it then. Skipping episodes is for sure out of the question for me though, because if I care little enough for what I'm watching so as to skip an entire season, I might as well drop it altogether, there's no point in half-assing it. Thanks regardless!

Yeah that's more or less where I'm at right now, but I think I'll give it a shot at least for a bit more, judging by some comments in the thread. And if nothing changes for me in the next season, that's probably where I'll drop it.

You bet, hope you enjoy it. The character development is second to none. You’ll be sympathizing with characters by the end who you would never have expected to at the start
