Back in my party days, the one thing that scared me more than anything was allowing myself to call out of work because I was hungover, or up all night, or just wasnt in the condition to work.

Going to work was my punishment because I knew if I called out once, it would be much easier to do it twice, then three times, then ultimately my life is a mess.

Have you taken other days off because of drinking or drugging? You might have bigger problems waiting for you.

Snooping through the phone is a bit rough in my opinion, but immediately going off on the boyfriend, assuming the worst is an even bigger issue. If they lack the trust to actually talk about this stuff or broach the topic with more tact then it shows just much more time they need, or at the very least how much of a trust issue op has.

Eh, I've worked at jobs, before, where 'I'm too drunk to come in' was a perfectly acceptable excuse. But you really have to know your manager(s) for that one to work.

That being said, I'm going to agree with some of the other posters: 99% of the time, your manager doesn't need to know why you're calling out. A simple 'I can't come in today' works just fine. Doesn't matter if it's because of illness, a family emergency, or your cat's birthday. They don't need to know.
