Reply to TIL - That avocado seeds are so large because they depended on extinct megafauna to eat and disperse them. by byronhadleigh
I just want to add that “megafauna” are not some long forgotten group of beasts that lived one JILLION years ago.
Megafauna still exist. In addition to blue whales, there are also less obvious examples like the moose.
Megafauna were common as recently as ~15,000 years ago, but saw a sudden decline due to a warming climate and human predation.
Your ancestors coexisted with megafauna and did not consider them separate from other animals (as far as we know). Many (not all) of the extinct megafauna are literally just bigger versions of things we have now. On the flip side, many of the animals we have now are the smaller version of the animals they coexisted with.
For example: beavers. Prior to the arrival of humans in the Americas, there was a giant species of beaver that was able to construct much larger dams than the beavers that we have left. The beavers we have now are like “miniature” versions of those beavers.
The small beavers almost went extinct, too. No different than their larger cousins.

Yeesh it sounds like such a massive waste from an environmental standpoint.

No, their word for avocado was just their slang word for testicles, like how we use “nuts” today.

There's also other limiting factors in size too, to be fair. Cancer being one of them, with a lot more cells to undergo regeneration the chance that one "goes rogue" becomes much more likely, especially since life spans typically become longer when a longer growth period is needed.
That being said some animals have developed counter measures like elephants that makes them much lower risk.

Reply to TIL The Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird used an Astro-inertial Navigation System to track Stars and determine its position and altitude. At Mach 3, the navigation system was accurate enough to limit drift to 1,000 feet (300 meters) off course. by shamelessterminator
My grandfather worked first hand with Kelly Johnson during the development of the Blackbird. He was brought on because he had experience with another supersonic aircraft, the B58. He was an Air Force navigator and had experience in the B36, B47, B58, and SR71. Coolest, and most humble aviator I've ever met.

Ligers make me sad. They can't move around much because of their size.

Have to agree, doing something like this deliberately should be outlawed. These animals will never have anything like a normal and healthy life.

Also their hearts are smaller than normal, resulting in reduced life spans. Just a real shame animals like this are created.

This sounds like the mad scientist idea from a B horror / apocalypse film.

They are also the unhealthiest of big cat species, it should really be illegal to create them. Simply something that should not exist and clearly lead very difficult and uncomfortable lives because of their being bred this way.

The most surprising thing about this, is as a Dutch person, i had no idea there is something as a Dutch shark society. Never met one as far as i can remember.

I remember when they sent out floppy disks. For a few years, I didn't need to buy disks or pay for internet access. Just cancel after the free month, and they would ask if you wanted just one more free month trial. Rinse and repeat. Perfect, because I was a teen with no money.

My friends and I used to AOL CD people's yards in high school. You could snag a whole stack of them at the grocery store and then arrange them to spell out things on the lawn.
Sorry Zach.
