Reply to comment by respondin2u in TIL that Walt Disney World began as "The Florida Project". Dummy corporations were used, by Walt Disney Productions, to buy up 27,000 acres of land to avoid bursts of land speculation in the Orlando area. Early rumors assumed possible development by NASA, Ford, the Rockefellers, and Howard Hughes. by jdward01
Probably didn't help that it was close to a Civil War Battlefield which caused historians to take action against them.

Sometimes it really does feel like that. A lot of modern patents are just utter junk and should have been thrown out for not being novel.

Reply to comment by artaig in TIL in the 1920s, Coco Chanel accidentally got a tan, and helped inspire the trend of sunbathing. Soon "sunlight therapy" was prescribed for almost every ailment from fatigue to tuberculosis. Before this, tanned skin was associated with the lower classes who work outside, and fair skin was revered. by Pfeffer_Prinz
Maybe in the developed world. In most of the developing/under developed world, some of the lowest paying jobs involve working outside (like manual laborers).

All i will say is you are dead wrong about my politics.
The author's wish does not override their duty to the public domain. Copyright is a social bargain, its not fair to break it, no matter how noble the cause. They had their copyright, its over.

It's Heracles though, right? As in Hera's glory. He was renamed in her honour.

It's not stealing from the public domain, it is following the author's wish for an exceptional good cause that benefits the entire world by pioneering treatment for sick children.
Dont try and impose your every man for himself selfish culture on everyone else, it's not even your government. The rest of the world doesnt follow Republican politics and it benefits greatly from it.

Reply to TIL that the oldest film on IMDb is "Passage de Vénus", a six second series of photographs of the transit of the planet Venus across the Sun on December 9th, 1874. by PresLyndonBJohnson36
The 1769 transit of venus is fascinating.
It's the first time the international community joined together to combine in a scientific experiment.
The idea was that if numerous explorers/scientists at many different areas of the earth record the time/trajectory of the transit of venus, they could calculate exactly how far away from the earth the sun was.
The experiment worked and they came to what we now know was very accurate results.
Captain Cook was one of the explorers recording it on the newly discovered Hawaiian islands.

This is an emotional argument, not a logical one. If the State is so concerned with funding the hospital, they should do it with tax money, not steal from the Public Domain.
