TIL that Tommy Chong (of Cheech and Chong) served a 9 month prison sentence for his role in financing and promoting a brand of bongs. He was a cellmate of "The Wolf of Wall Street" Jordan Belfort, who credits Chong for encouraging him to write his memoirs. They have remained friends ever since.

TIL: To "protect the truth," a woman recorded hundreds of thousands of hours of TV news between 1977 and 2012. Her archives grew to about 71,000 VHS and Betamax tapes stacked in her home and apartments she rented to store them. Upon her death, the Internet Archive agreed to digitize the volumes.

TIL when Dan Shechtman discovered quasiperiodic crystals, he was widely ridiculed. Nobel Laureate Linus Pauling said of the discovery, "There is no such thing as quasicrystals, only quasi-scientists." Shechtman would later win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the discovery.
