TIL the band Green Day got its name from the phrase, "green day", which was slang in the Bay Area, where the band originated, for spending a day doing nothing but smoking marijuana. Armstrong once admitted in 2001 that he considered it to be "the worst band name in the world".

TIL in 1822 a stork arrived in Germany with an arrow through its neck. The wood was from central Africa, over 3000 miles away. This convinced zoologists that birds migrated in the winter, and disproved other theories such as underwater hibernation, or transformation into other animals (like mice)

TIL that photographer Carol Highsmith donated tens of thousands of her photos to the Library of Congress, making them free for public use. Getty Images later claimed copyright on many of these photos, then accused her of copyright infringement by using one of her own photos on her own site.

TIL about a 16 year old art student who lost most of her fingers when she plunged her hands into a bucket of plaster until it set. The heat of the chemical reaction caused terrible burns when fellow students and teachers failed to remove the plaster with a hammer. The school was fined only £20,000.
