TIL Vincent Price published various cookbooks including a five volume series titled Mary and Vincent Price present a National Treasury of Cookery. Price promoted the cookbooks on TV shows including on the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson where he demonstrated how to poach a fish in a dishwasher.

TIL The "Semolina Pilchard" mentioned in "I Am the Walrus" is a reference to Scotland Yard drug squad detective Norman "Nobby" Pilcher, who led a midnight drug raid on John Lennon's London flat in October 1968. He'd targeted musicians Mick Jagger, Brian Jones, Eric Clapton and Donovan prior to that.

TIL that when Unsolved Mysteries aired a segment on missing child Nyleen Marshall, they were contacted by a man who thought he might have gone to school with Nyleen. This turned out not to be Nyleen, but a different missing child, Monica Bonilla, who had been abducted by her noncustodial parent.

TIL John Steinbeck IV wrote an article in January 1968 about marijuana usage among the troops. This set off a media firestorm, & the Army began clamping down on marijuana usage, arresting ~1000 G.I.s a week for possession. Many G.I.s switched to heroin, which was odorless and thus harder to detect.

TIL that a branch of the Clan Bruce in Scotland, relatives of Robert the Bruce, emigrated from Scotland to Russia to 1647. Many families of Scottish origin were also part of the Russian Empire's landed aristocracy, including descendants of Clan Ramsay, Clan Leslie, Clan Drummond, and Clan Hamilton.

TIL That in 1774 James Cook charted Sandy Island off the coast of New Caledonia. Despite its' inclusion in official maps and charts for over two centuries in 2012 an Australian survey vessel proved the island had never actually existed and may have been a 'pumice raft' floating in the area.
