TIL During the 1966 World Cup final between England and West Germany, England were ahead in extra time, and striker Geoff Hurst tried to hit the ball as far into the stands as possible to waste time. Instead, he mishit the ball and sent it into the top corner of the German goal. England won 4-2.

TIL Douglas Engelbart never received any royalties for the invention of the mouse. In an interview he said "SRI (Stanford Research Institute) patented the mouse, but they had no idea of its value. Some years later it was known that they had licensed it to Apple Computer for something like $40,000."

TIL a UK punk band called the FF'ers were bottled at the Reading Festival in 2008 after rumours circulated their set was a secret Foo Fighters gig. Their bassist said items thrown included "bottles, shoes, clumps of earth, phones, a full packet of cigarettes (exactly what we needed after the gig)"

TIL about Saturnalia - a Roman Holiday held between 17 - 23 December. The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn, in the Roman Forum, and a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying, and a carnival atmosphere.

TIL in the 1970s, artist Andy Warhol thought that his artwork wouldn’t go up in value after his death. In May of 2022, Warhol’s portrait of Marilyn Monroe sold for $195 Million - making it the most expensive American artwork ever sold at auction.
