TIL of the Bolvano Train Disaster which claimed the lives of more than 500 people in 1944. After the train became stalled in a tunnel, the passengers and crew succumbed to carbon monoxide poisoning when the locomotives attempted to continue and filled the tunnel with smoke.

TIL One of the only pieces of Hitler's dream reconstruction of Berlin as Germania is an enormous concrete cylinder in the Tiergarten neighborhood. It's called the Schwerbelastungskörper which translates as "heavy load-bearing body." It was to test the load-bearing capability of the ground.

TIL a UK punk band called the FF'ers were bottled at the Reading Festival in 2008 after rumours circulated their set was a secret Foo Fighters gig. Their bassist said items thrown included "bottles, shoes, clumps of earth, phones, a full packet of cigarettes (exactly what we needed after the gig)"
