We've got an excellent woodstove and small and mighty little generator, so we kept the fridge mostly cold (we froze big yogurt containers to add to the cold mass of the fridge). We are lucky to have these things, for sure. There are still people who won't get power back until Friday or maybe even Saturday

I hope that’s not the real issue, because that would be recklessly irresponsible, but unfortunately I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised.

I have also noticed that road markings are markedly less visible, whatever policy caused this needs to be reversed immediately.

Yep this was me and my brother too! My liberal arts school was 65,000 per year at the time and I came out of it with way less student loan debt than my twin who attended UVM. Since we’re the same age it was also a direct comparison for our respective schools looking at our family’s financial situation and determining aid.

Agree. Selfish people everywhere. I’ll also add that having grown up in a state with lots of private property and no trespassing signs, I would never just go on someone’s property without permission. Living in a more populated state with smaller lots and visible neighbors makes you assume all land is private even if it’s unposted. If I did use unposted land, I definitely wouldn’t leave trash or use an atv. Those are common problems in many states, I certainly don’t want to see it in VT. I’m also aware enough to realize I don’t have experience with this type of land use, so I would err on the side of caution until I understood the expectations.

Sounds like reforming the property tax system to more heavily take land value into account over improvement value is a good step towards solving the issue, but I doubt this will be popular with Vermonters, since it heavily incentivizes development of the land, and makes losers of people who have owned recently valuable land for a long time but are too poor to develop it.

I suppose once things have been a way for so long they feel entitled, which sucks because there's no appreciation. Then if you do stop being hospitable, your reputation suffers unfairly. I wonder if another kind of posted sign basically.politely stating your case and expectations for use that people.might abide? Like posted on a trail?

Tuition by itself is about 19k a year for instate. When you include room/board food and other expenses UVM estimates it costs an instate student 32k a year to attend UVM and an out of state student 57k a year.

There are ways to get it down like merit scholarships for instate students which can knock up to 10k off eaxh year, but it's still crazy expensive.

If they can continue to live at home and get a merit scholarship it's fine, but otherwise they're going to need to apply for every possible scholarship, do ROTC, get an athletic scholarship, or use family money to abvoid going into a shit ton of debt.
