I've been in the NEK for the last 5 years. I burn approximately 400 gallons yearly on home heating oil in my 1500 Sq ft cape cabin built in 2006 with a system 2000 water boiler. I have radiant in my foundation. My thermostat is set at 70. I'm a member of the Hilltop Buyer's program using Irving Energy. Current rack price is $3.66 a gallon.

My average daily energy cost for the month of December $2.67 using 12 kwh through VELCO. I love the smarthub app.

I wouldn't say quintessential but, very common yes. Vermont is a pretty diverse place. We have a quantity of "take Vermont back" Trumpy woodchucks on one end and these guys on the other end (maybe) and everything in between including some pretty bizarre mixtures of the extremes.

Wow, I thought my energy bills were bad. We have a forced draft heater on natural gas in Burlington. Our bill in December was $127/mo through Vermont Gas. 72ccf. We also had $77 for electric, which runs the fan, but I assume that’s a small fraction of our electrical usage. Our home is a 1120 sq foot half of a duplex.

Fair enough, bad example.

You're still missing it. Whether something is "appropriate" or not in a given setting is a matter of opinion. It doesn't automatically mean if someone thinks someone else's behaviour is inappropriate that they will do something about it.

To use your analogy- I don't think it's "appropriate" for people to do 90 on the interstate around here like many people often do. But like you say- do I pull out in front of someone I see flying up the left lane? No, of course not.

Or, back to the eating thing, I personally wouldn't eat anything like durian or another strong smelling thing in public if it's likely to bother other people. I'm considerate, so I don't think it's "appropriate". But again, of course I wouldn't bother somebody enjoying some smelly snack.
