how about they reduce their operating costs as a business/utility that's regulated and stop passing everything to the end user/consumer we can't support every hike/raise and cost they encounter specifically in these cold months possibly leading to recession and lost jobs.

Someone did the numbers and above ground lines are cheaper for the power companies.

Correct. Time to end this flat out inequity in service, price and benefit from a basic public good.
Vermont can do better.
Question is, do our legislators care?

Where are these regions in which underground utlities are not incredibly expensive? With, y'know, actual numbers to back your statement up.

Yeah...So the whole reason we have utility co-ops is because GMP and the "big players" were unwilling to run cable to a lot of the rural areas.

I think you got your answer but I’ll add that it’s really hard to fix broken power lines under ground versus if they’re above ground. You have to disable huge sections of the power grid to perform troubleshooting and identify the broken lines. Then it’s a huge pain in the ass and takes a long time to pull the lines and replace them.

They just finished doing this in downtown Waterbury. The process took about 3 years with having to put in new sidewalks and everything.

This wasn't in VT, but on a hike up Mt. Garfield a few years ago I passed a guy who said to me, out of the blue, "whoever said 'leave no stone unturned' never visited New Hampshire"

Well the solution then is to go solar and tell your utility to disconnect you. I won't hold my breath.

Just a few thousand customers for most of those. The thought that when they pay significantly more for electricity they should eat the loss is just silly. At least for those of us with GMP they are not trying to raise rates because they smartly do not contract for electricity generated from fossil fuels.
Trying to imagine the fat cat CEO of Morrisville Water & Light out on his yacht right now. Ya no not really.

Do you want to wait until spring thaw to fix wiring problems? And we can't "just dig" through rock. We'd have to blast the neighborhood.

It's time spent in the woods exercising, it's thoroughly enjoyable to most people who do it. Not everything is relatable to dollars, but if you must, I can certainly think of less lucrative activities we all engage with every day.
