Just went there with a friend who got off her night shift. A much needed fun atmosphere with great food. If you drink, definitely recommend the mimosa flight!

Love waterworks. The ambiance is great and I’ve had different experiences in the different sections to eat; main room, side room over the River, loft upstairs, and the bar. Their homemade chips and dip is an amazing appetizer!!

The same people who are going to say this is normal since we’re such a white state are also the ones that will complain about there’s tons of cars at the trailhead from places like NY and NJ and other population centers with more non-white people than here. It’s not normal and the lack of diversity in the outdoors is present in every part of the country. It’s obviously not just about the lack of diversity in who lives in vermont.

The article nothing to do with how outnumbered black people are in the outdoors. I thought that was obvious but- here we are.

Henry's Diner downtown. Walk there at 6 am because you couldn't fall asleep, recent snowfall muffles the activity of a parcel delivery guy and a nearby plow. You shuffle in & hang your hat and jacket on the coatrack, you're the first person to comb through the local paper as you are greeted by some usual suspects. You have some fresh coffee and eavesdrop on the workers as they bundle up silverware and refill pepper shakers, they don't care if you hear about what they have to say about their guy friend. You pick from the homely list of Americana diner food and an old-timer a few chairs down at the counter makes a comment about your boots, which sends him into a tangent about how he used to mix his own cement as a teenager. You're not in a hurry so you indulge him. The sound of metal spatulas slapping against the flat top comes from the cooking area, along with the aroma of fresh sausage gravy and maple syrup. You peek at the cook through the serving window and they have a really cool tattoo that they probably regret.

Maybe summers there are nice. I've only been there in Septembers.
I work road construction outside Philly and summer doing roadwork in southeastern PA is really rough at times.
I just love winter, especially starry nights with a full moon on the snow.

This is a horrible thing to say this comment should be removed. I’m happy to talk about how entitled YOU are by saying this but I would prefer if you would learn how to spell it first.

Exactly! People are so quick to dismiss this article just because of how white VT is and it’s pissing me off, it’s an issue everywhere!

I personally am not going to assume I know what makes strangers comfortable. When I see black people on the trail, I react as I would to anyone else, which is to say" Hello" as we're passing each other. Usually me going up, them on their way down. I think black people are as complicated as anyone else. Beyond basic decency, what makes one person comfortable may make another very uncomfortable. I'm not going to force a conversation w/ someone because of their race. Especially not in a place where most people go to relax. stuff like "prioritize their comfort" seems like empty virtue signalling.

Because those issues have left deep wounds in our society and we have historically ignored them. Just now we're allowing people from those groups into the discussion for the first time, and that is causing a lot of friction. Just look at the comment section of this article; the top comment in this comment section is someone willfully misrepresenting what the author of the article said, with a heavy implication that the author is stupid.
It's true that a lot of the programming can be clumsy or awkward. Sometimes, they get a little stuck talking about diversity and ignoring issues of class in a capitalist society, like in this article in which NPR talks about how we need more women Venture Capitalists. But overall, people talk about it a lot because we have a lot of talking about it left to do.

Probably Asiana Noodle on Church Street. Or Red Panda Essex. They're both little cozy places that feel very hole in the wall, and I've only had good experiences.

MLC is set up as more of a market/prepared foods spot now with some eat in options I believe. Check out their new sister restaurant at the top of the rotary, Onion City Chicken & Oyster!

Of all outdoor sports, hiking is pretty cheap. You don't need much in VT. Our hikes are generally not more than a couple miles from a road. You''re not going on a wilderness expidition in VT. Decent footwear and a water bottle should do it. A headlamp doesn't hurt. No need For GPS on a 2 mile out and back trail.

From the article:
> In Vermont, 90% of the population identifies as white, and the folks who utilize the Long Trail largely reflect that number

I don't take exception to her expressing how she feels and I'm in no position to question that. I feel her somehow divining what other people are supposedly feeling is less well supported.

My wife is a 3rd shift nurse and she loves places like these . The chicken and waffles was good and gives you that southern comfort food . The huevos rancheros is also awesome if your into that .
