I have a 16 panel solar array on the ground with 24 48-volt batteries inside my house . Using a Honda 6500 generator for the darker days and to top off the batteries . My house is not grid tied . I have an overbuilt system because I wanted to run things essentially as a regular, grid tied house would and account for any additional people in my house in the future . That being said I am still aware of what is running in my house at all times and there were a few things the inverter and system didn’t appreciate . ( like when I missed the specs on a new oven that said it was electric convection/fail ) I like the independence of my house but some days off grid life throws some wrenches . I would think about whether you have enough to sink into a system that will deliver the power to meet your needs or if not - what are you willing to sacrifice or adjust ? If your panels can’t deliver to meet your needs you may need a backup generator in the winter . If the panels are accessible you may want to get a long handled brush so you can remove the snow all winter . I would strongly recommend a high quality generator as it will need to run and you will likely hear it . The loudest generators known to man would ruin my quality of life in the woods but the Honda runs pretty quiet . Take in mind all the maintenance of these interconnected systems ; the inverter settings were a little complex initially to me, batteries such as the ones I have require regular watering . If inside - the battery array will need to be vented to the outdoors . If using a generator - it needs maintenance, oil changes, etc. also you will have to be hauling gas up ( unless it’s propane) Our system has worked flawlessly for the most part but it’s needed repairs and maintenance . In one case , we could not find anyone to do the repair. A fan blew on the inverter and the unit was overheating . Had to learn how to remove the tan and replace it myself . It was crazy but I managed to do it . I would say consider these issues and the cost and occasional difficulty in getting people to service the system . But hey if I could learn all this stuff I think anyone could . I appreciate people like you on the move to go solar and so does the earth.Good luck with your project .

I think if you did a schoolwide..hell even a state wide ban on sports for 1,2,3 years that MIGHT be enough to drive home the point that this stuff is Extra-curricular and not really relevant to actual education. Put it back on the communities that support student athletics to be held accountable as a whole..see how fast this stuff gets nipped when everybody pays for the ignorant actions of a few.

This whole land shortage problem is quite new in Southern Vermont. Pre pandemic, buildable lots languished on the market, sometimes for years. I purchased 25 beautiful view acres for $50K that had been listed for 3 years with no offers. Things changed quickly with Covid, it was as if a switch had been thrown. The same was true with affordable houses, zero demand to bidding wars almost overnight. I doubt the market will correct anytime soon. Contractors used to need work and were easier to find too. Hindsight is always 20/20.

There are several juvenile bald eagles on carmi and fairfield pond. Hard at a distance to distinguish them from a gold eagle as they are patterned similarly. Hate to say that’s more likely, but seems more likely especially given the area, and the number of bald eagles in that area. Tail pattern does say golden, but also says juvenile bald.

If anyone is looking for the bald eagles on carmi they nest on the tallest pine tree 100yds south of the island on the west side of the lake. They also frequent the tallest pine tree on the southern point, and a pine tree on the east shore just north of the state park.

Fairfield they like to sit in the tree off the first point on the north end

Your bird here is showing more white in the wing and underneath than a golden eagle does. It does look good for an osprey though, and they have almost the same wingspan (5ft, vs 6 for an eagle) - very large birds themselves. Golden Eagles trend to travel solo too, tho there are exceptions.

Fantastic sighting! There are only a few thousand golden eagles in eastern North America total. That means your find is an important data point for an uncommon species - please consider submitting this sighting to eBird.org, a open access bird database run by Cornell and used for research projects around the globe.

It’s also a misconception that because Boomers were not the initial movers, they therefore had no part of It when it indeed defined them. Who do you think the millions were who marched in all those protests, attended all those concerts. Who was the audience embracing and supporting and being inspired by all those initial movers? Did you march in any protests and attend concerts when you were 16,18,20? So did they.

Student occupation of Columbia U? All Boomers. National guard occupation at Kent State? Responding to Boomers. Dead students at Kent State? Boomers. Don’t overwork the mild point some writers have tried to make about the initial movers. Jerry Garcia was older than the cutoff date, but had band members who were younger. I fail to see a meaningful cultural or generation gap between members of the GD.

Finally, they were drafting for Vietnam up to 1952 birth dates and registering people for it through 1956 birthdates. I defy anyone to claim Vietnam and the draft protests were not a part of it.

It was a boom in population and a cultural era that ended with the election of Reagan.

I didn’t come to start an argument and I resent the nit picking

During install and after it was built.

Rafters were crowned so bad that a straight trim board was inches off the roof mid span which touching on both ends. Corners of house so out of plumb and square that it was impossible to get corner trim on right so siding has to all be shimmed off the house. Doors openings leaned so far doors wouldn’t stay closed unless latched. Roof singles installed so sloppily that the previous course of nails was exposed oh maybe 1/3 the courses.

Many many electrical and hvac issues too, but I didn’t deal with them directly.

If it was any one of the issues it would be not great that it slipped through. But the fact that it was every part/trade that had issues points to a much broader quality control issue. It wasn’t something that slipped through, everything was just shit.

I think as you're here in Vermont, you're going to be able to find quality Maple sugar products pretty much anywhere you go - ask locally first. I'm more comfortable shipping the plastic jugs - if people don't like those containers, they can always pour the syrup off into something more acceptable (in my home we regularly use a glass decanter that we fill as needed from the gallon jug).
