Not at all what I am trying to say.
Say you see a child treat all people with kindness and respect. They play in a sports game against kids and there’s some rough play going from both sides of the game. That same kid and their peers is then being drug through the mud because maybe, a spectator said something unkind.
Don’t get me wrong, there is no room for racism. But if you watched the situation unfold, Winooski player head butted a kid knocking him out. Would you be happy if someone did this to you regardless of their skin color? Should we tiptoe around being angry because we are different races? Why not be our genuine selves to each other while also understanding that people of color have a history of being treated unfairly. Genuinely making efforts to break the system that is treating folks unfairly.
OP- point of this post was to explain that Franklin county (with the exception of Saint albans) is a lot of simple folks that get a bad wrap. I’m 100% sure there are people who have racist mindsets, wether on a micro aggression scale or not there’s no room for it. The vast majority of people here will lend you a hand when you’re down, pull you out of a ditch if you’re stuck, and tell you you’re being a jerk if you’re being a jerk. The authenticity is unmatched. This leaves space for others, for example a person of color to call us out if we are not being inclusive and informed. Best of luck in your journey to find a great spot for your family! Franklin county is inexpensive, and full of charm. If you can manage to come in without making accusations and with a genuine approach to becoming a community member you will thrive!

This is the truth. Downvote all you want, but racism exists at the intersection in the social ladder where jim bob sees his black neighbor as a threat to his social status. Historically that is at the lower ends of the socio-economic ladder (obviously southern slavery was a different game wealthy aristocracy perpetuating racism purely for financial gain) if you look at the battle for social standing as america grew it was normally some white immigrant community battling the black community for status. Look at the Irish, and the Italians. Over time this has transitioned into a battle between poor whites who have done worse than their parents and fear falling out of the middle class and POC who are doing better than their parents and rising into the middle class. The poor whites become virulent racists to maintain their status on the social ladder. Unfortunately for our country, the poor whites make up a greater and more unified voting block than the groups they oppose and show up at the polls, so we get regressive policies and states like Florida.

Yup, I remember a few winters we went a week without hitting the plus side of zero.
I don’t miss it. It was hunker down survival mode. Needed to bundle up just to run to the woodshed to grab an armload of wood. I ended up with frostbite one because I touched a piece of metal that was -20 while I was trying to get a car to start.

Read something the other day about Hinesburg fans shouting racial slurs at the Milton HS basketball team. Think Hinesburg suspended all fans from games for a bit.
But yeah, I hear a lot of that disfusting crap is directed at Winooski teams. Wtf. These are kids. And even if they weren't.

Don’t love the weekly posts on winter temp/snow that just stir the pot. Climate change is real but no single day, week, month, or even year in itself is evidence of it. Last year’s winter was about 5 degrees colder than the average winter. This one’s warmer. That is just evidence of variability and regression to the mean - a mean which is undoubtedly very, very slowly going up.

This comment actually sums him up quite well and is only missing the fact that he's very much a slimy salesman as well. Like movie character car salesman or a snake oil salesman. He has a long history of owning several different businesses and types of businesses, not so much from his own success, but rather from his wife and her family's money. If he follows his trends, he'll give up 802 pizza eventually and move on to his next random thing. It's very odd knowing he owns a pizza place now. The guy had a real estate magazine at one point before this and it was so annoying how often he pushed that onto everyone.
It's like he has a bunch of random business ideas that he tosses into a hat and every 5 or so years he pulls another one out and pursues it.
This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for every single thing you mentioned, and plenty more, about who he actually is as a person.

West coast skiers expect 300 inches of fresh light powder. East coast skiers expect 1 inch of ice and disappointment. Discomfort breeds innovation lol

I know the owner and have for years, and I created this account for the sake of posting this comment. My family has always known his family.
Through the years, the owner will get a random business idea, pursue it with the ton of money his wife has, do it for several years, and then abandon it entirely when he comes up with his next thing.
This is not the problem with him, though.
While he's become smarter about not being so publicly aggressive, and not being so public about his political and religious ideologies, the guy is absolutely, undeniably, a diehard Trump-supporting bigot who in closer social circles is very vocally against LGBT rights, immigrants, and anyone who isn't a far right conspiracy theorist. He's totally QAnon, but pretty close to it.
He always does a good job keeping this to himself publicly up until he finally cracks, and he always, always cracks eventually. His recent comments on the South Royalton Facebook page got plenty of negative attention recently based on other people I've talked to and other comments I've seen on Facebook, but I unfortunately haven't been able to find them. I gave up my pursuit because I'm never surprised at him ever lashing out. If anyone has a screenshot, or a link if it's still up, I'd like to check it out anyway.
He's mellowed down a bit with his responses to reviews recently, but you can get the tiniest glimpse through the cracks as to how aggressive and backstabby he can be with how he has responded to some reviewers. He has a lot of close friends and family who give his restaurants 5 star reviews because he gets buddy-buddy with them, kisses a ton of ass, and convinces them to rate 802 pizza highly. There are people who have had legitimate good experiences with his two restaurants, sure, but he's one of the most artificial people I've ever had the unfortunate experience of knowing for the last 25+ years. He really aims to be a massive snake oil salesman, but a diehard bigoted POS too.

I second this! I’m biracial and I grew up in central Vermont. I only had a few kids call me the n word in school (literally maybe 2 or 3) and while I definitely experience micro aggressions, I internalized it and was really impacted until I was an adult and realized how unfair my treatment was.
My advice to you is that your kids will likely experience microaggressions where ever they go. You have to set them up for success and teach them what to tolerate and what to not tolerate, and how to safely and appropriately stand up for themselves. Truth be told, I’m not condoning violence but I think a lot of the folks who treated me poorly could’ve been easily corrected with a punch or two (and one was! Never had trouble with that kid again).
I know they’re both a bit of a jump from Rutland/Killington, but Putney area and Burlington area have both been very tolerant for me. As for the Rutland area, we’ll that’s sort of where I grew up. I watched a darker completed family get bullied right out of my school once so if you have any personal questions you want to ask, please feel free to dm me. For reference, I am 24F, moms white, dads very dark, and I am black enough to notice but white enough to be tolerated most places.

If you work in killington it’s pretty hard to avoid Rutland. It’s the most affordable and it’s the closest grocery store.

We got over a foot yesterday and more is coming tonight in southern vt. I also remember a winter a few years ago where central VT got dumped on and southern vt had no snow. Its always been that way it depends where the storm fronts pass through.

This time last year it was brutally cold, like -17 degrees F in the mornings, with bitter windchill. I was fighting freezing pipes for multiple days in a few rental units i own so this year I’m relieved AF it’s in the 30’s and seemingly pleasant!
Sorry to those few friends that decided to buy snowmobiles…years ago I used to get tempted, now you’re lucky if you can break them outta the garage just to start it up ;)

So because they say please and thank you when they order an ice cream, they couldn’t be racist when tempers fly?
Edit: you saying “kids will be kids” just goes to reduce your credibility further..

best snow driving cars iv owned were 2000 and 99 subaru legacy and legacy gt 5mt. did 60 mile commute to work round trip around the Worcester range from stowe for 5 years and drove through some serious snow, also big skier and spent most big storm days going to the mtn or hiking locations. if you can get a manual it will help. i would put the best non studded snow tires i could buy on my 1000$ car and run them for 2 years through the summer months. cheaper than swapping them out. always make sure to wash your car to keep the breaks clean. and your car will never be inspectable. in 10 years i was only able to get my cars to pass inspection once. vt state inspection and registration is a money racket. now in oregon theres no inspection and a 4 year registration for the same price as a one year in vt. car insurance is doubled out here tho. in vt you kinda have to have a car there is limited public transportation and no funding for more

Hello and welcome. I’m quite white so it’s hard for me to say how the racism is around here but people mostly seem pretty accepting of others. Internet around killington is served pretty well by EC fiber which is great. Rutland will be your closest “city” which is where you’d likely go for groceries and other errands. You’re moving to a ski area so housing will be tough to find long term and be expensive. I mostly wanted to touch on working at killington. Make sure your husbands friend isn’t pulling his leg about work all year. It’s crazy busy now and restaurants need the help but it does slow down A LOT during the spring, summer and fall. Make sure you live close to killington because he will be expected to drive up to work in the worst of weather, it’s busiest when it snows and the tourists drive like animals.

I have lived here for almost 50 years, and in all the years I can remember, we've had warm stretches - the typical January thaw-, but this is the first Dec/Jan where I haven't seen below-zero temperatures. It's weird.
