The weather on the west side of the mountains (Rutland) can be quite different from the east side (Killington). Route 4 is the main artery between the two, and is usually well maintained, but it is a mountain pass so it can get… interesting. It’s not the Rockies or the Alps where its jungle on onside and tundra on the other separated by several 8000 foot tall hills, but it is something to be aware of. If you just look at the forecast for Rutland, you have an excellent chance of being surprised when you get up to Killington.

“Have it and not need it” isn’t a horrible plan, and there’s bound to be someone at your hotel who has cats and would buy a box of litter for 1/2 price. Do you need to buy blankets, collapsible shovels, road flares, cases of water, freeze dried food and flashlights? Not unless you plan on exploring fire and logging roads.

It’s kind of funny how the article describes the person who discovered it as a “Crimean amateur astronomer” to avoid taking sides on who that peninsula belongs to. I would have expected NPR to say he was Ukrainian since they have a legitimate claim, although maybe the guy identifies as Russian and they didn’t want to say that.

This is a tactic police departments down south have used many times when they don't support an incoming new boss for whatever reason (down there it's usually racism). I'll admit I don't know the specifics of this situation, but it's incredibly deranged that this takes place. These officers swore an oath to that community, not the Sheriff. We need to somehow stop letting police bounce around the country. They need to actually care about the communities they serve. They need to be a part of the communities they serve.

It's wild that this only scratches the surface of the issues. Also, let's not forget that the Addison Country Sheriff was hit with TWO felony SEXUAL ASSAULT charges, AND THEN his ex-wife went public saying he was violent with her as well. This was also after a long investigation. It's insane that the people of Addison County haven't simply chased him out of town.

State highway are pretty clear, usually. So far, its forecasted snow on the 5th and 6th. It’s also supposed to be freaking cold vs just cold (below zero=freaking cold to me). You’ll also want to check the resort for the weather at their elevation. It can be very very different. For instance the weather channel puts the town at 30F and clear but the resort is saying 16F with 7” of snow expected.

If you get caught out driving when it snows, don’t be the fastest guy on the road and don’t be afraid to drive 20mph. Swing by a local grocery store and get a box of cheap kitty litter just in case you get stuck. Google how to use it to get unstuck before you need to cause cell service in the mountains not only sucks, it sucks based on who your service provider is.

You can get through all of Lake Champlain unimpeded, but I'd be careful in the wide parts as that's dominated by motorboats and it can get pretty choppy in high winds. I know almost nothing about the Canadian side except that there is a dam somewhere along the Richelieu. And I only know that because NY and VT officials were trying to get Quebec to open the dam up one year when a Lake Champlain spring flood lasted into July.
