I was going to make a separate post about this later (still gathering data), but currently it is -9f outside my house, and the house is right at 70 degrees with heat pumps only. No supplemental heat aside from baking some cookies a few hours ago. The real test will be tonight when we get to -13, but so far so good.

Home weather station - Winds are 5 mph right now, 9 below temperature, and 20 below wind chills while it's 65 inside. I'm about to make a loaf of sourdough, so my home is about to get nice and toasty and smell amazing.

Vermont has had vouchers for children for towns that don’t have a high school for many years, and it has worked well.

The Supreme Court said states can’t discriminate against some students by only offering vouchers to a select few.

The education establishment doesn’t want to lose their stranglehold on 2 billion in state spending on preK-12 education that current results in <45% proficiency state wide.

So is this an issue? Yes Are Vermonts children being offered equal access to quality education? No Is the NEA looking out for the best interest of your child? No.

It’s not reasonable to blame each individual parent for wanting what’s best for their child. It is reasonable to expect parents who choose to skip the publicly funded option to pay for the private school themselves.

Public education only works if we all have a vested interest in its continued success. Vouchers help undermine the idea that we all in it together and therefor undermine the public education system for the benefit of a few.

If you want your kids to not go to public school that’s great. Pony up the cash.

And furthermore, for how you do it, simply just ask when they moved to VT when they get their vouchers. Personally I think right from the beginning that we shouldn’t have done this program for anybody that wasn’t a current Vermont resident. We have enough issues in our state, that as much as I feel for anybody that’s homeless, I don’t agree with giving free hotel rooms on our dime to people who came here for that. I do think we need to help our existing homeless population, but there has to be a way to do that without incentivizing more homeless people relocating here.

I have a Mitsubishi two zone for our main house and then a Fujitsu smaller unit for my office, both are doing just fine. The Fujitsu is a bit noisy. Both structures are insulated with spray foam and spent a fair amount of time air sealing. We also installed a ERV for fresh air. Overall things are warm.

We have a small portrait fireplace in the living room that makes it comfortable in the evenings.

We don’t change the thermostat up or down. We keep it at a constant 68F.

The only thing with the setup is that during Uber cold temps, it’s helpful to keep the bedroom doors cracked at night to allow heat in. It’s not a biggie to us.

Would you support vouchers at public schools? I.e. every child gets a voucher to be used at the public school of their choice. Lots of districts already provide choice, doesn’t that disadvantage those who do not?

Okay so in the last two years Vermont’s homeless population has exploded, making us the second highest per capita. Also in the past two years we’ve started giving vouchers out for free hotel rooms. Homeless people have moved into Vermont to take advantage of this at high amounts. I would like to see an actual report of how much this has happened. Is our growth in homeless people been solely or predominantly immigrants from other states?

I know of two hotels where the majority of the people there have moved to Vermont to take advantage of this program. I don’t have any evidence to say how much that reflects the rest of the state. I was saying it would be nice if we could get that information.
