Cracking sounds coming from your roof could definitely be your rafters moving with the cold. I had that sound too. These loud noises echoed down the whole mountain, it was crazy. Could have been the old dairy barn down the road moving I suppose, but damn it might be coming down with all that noise.

Interesting.. similar conditions (even altitude), heard very loud series of bangs earlier. Thought maybe a tree limb hit the roof but nothing on the ground near the house.

I don't live in Vermont but have family and visit frequently, have been up to Burlington but mostly in southern Vermont and never had any issues. Explored some of the trails by camel's hump and had signal the whole time.

I'm not sure how the coverage is, but I wouldn't recommend Google Fi because it's on TMO's network and TMO just got breached, resulting in Fi customer data being exfiltrated by the hackers. Conversely, Verizon has much better security practices (though they are expensive and I wish I could leave them too).

Apologies for assuming you were a newbie in your first year. :)

(I just talked a colleague out of digging out the infra-red heat lamp leftover from from the chick stage and setting it up in her coop tonight, hers is pretty close to the house and I really don't feel like hearing the fire sirens go off in the wee hours.)

For what it's worth, I have had friends with elderly ladies who expired gently but suddenly in big swings, so we both know it can happen - but hopefully for you it won't.

I've got one who molted wayyy late, still filling in some of the fluffy bits. We'll see, hopefully she'll get herself into the middle of the perch lineup and draw heat from her neighbors.

I had plans to eventually move to a “non-operating” gold town with school choice so I could send my kids to a private/independent school. The COVID boom fucked everything up and I can’t compete with out of state money, remote workers, and air bnb. It’s super frustrating that because of where I live I’m stuck with one public school option, while families one town away can send their kids to any public, private, or independent school of their choice.

1200sf 2 story house, 18k centrally ducted Mistubishi. Most would consider this quite undersized! But we got our home sealed and insulated beforehand. We do well, but start to droop when it gets below -5 (currently mid sixties in the house and -13 outside). Last winter we had a -15 to 0 stretch for 48 hrs and the house stayed in the 60s.

Huge caveat here. We have an internal electric resistance duct heater that is NOT working and has never worked due to a broken relay we discovered today. It's 5 kW on a dedicated 30 Amp breaker. If this was working I'm sure we'd be up to 70F indoors no problem. Get your installer to test the backup electric heat!

I once skied Killington in -15 temps when I was working there cause a friend of mine convinced me it was a good idea cause of very few people on the normally crowded slopes in those conditions. I was pretty insulted but didn’t realize my right earlobe was sticking out from under my scarf …i never felt it and I got frostbite. Just one of many bad life decisions I made in my early 20s.
